I hope someone who knows more than me can enlighten me with this problem I'm having.

I bought COD 5 the day before and I wanted to LAN co-op on the 2 pcs that I have. So I used my cd-key and created an online profile on both machines but when I tried to connect it gave me error: "this key is already in use on another computer".

So I bought another copy of the game yesterday and reinstalled it on the one pc and created my online profile there as well.

The problem is that it still says the key is in use??? Any ideas why and what I should do?? I dont want to play online I just want to play co-op on lan.

We tried to do the same at a lan this week as well, you will unfortunately need two original copies of the game to play as the co-op is linked to the cd key while multiplayer is not.

I have 2 original cd keys and it still gives me the same message. Would they have blacklisted my first key if I used a no cd crack? I don't think so though because I can still login on both pc's online.

Has anyone actually played LAN co-op than can confirm?

Do I have to download the latest patch 1.1?

There is a LAN fix available that allows you to play codwaw on LAN without the need to authenticate the cdkeys online. Send me a pm and I'll forward you the details :)

Thanks for the help. Anyway I have found the reason why it was not working. I didn't know that both pc's have to be online to play lan co-op (didn't make sense to me so I never tried that) but I can now play co-op. Thanks very much for the help though :)

Online Required for Co-op?

Has anyone confirmed that online Internet access is required for COD 5 co-op play?

I had the same experiences as the others who have posted in this thread. My brother and I have 2 legal copies of the software both of which could play online just fine. We could even play co-op online with no problems.

However, we were in a situation where we brought our PCs to a vacation home that had no Internet access. We set up the LAN just fine. The PCs could ping one another with no problem. The two PCs could see one another in COD 5's co-op setup screens without a problem. We could set up and configure a game and even join the game. Right up to the point where they were "synchronizing" everything was OK. Then we always got the message that "the CD key was already in use".

It seems pretty messed up that you need Internet access in order to play against one another on a LAN. Has anyone found a way around this?

Get the LAN fix for cod5, it will solve all of your problems :)

StoneCold -- thanks for the incredibly fast reply!

I googled "COD5 LAN Fix" and I saw it at several sites. It doesn't appear to be an "official" patch from the manufacturer. Do you have a site that you recommend getting the patch from?

Do you know if the patch just hits the EXE file? If so, I guess I should make a backup of the EXE file. I would presume that if there is a COD5 1.2 or greater patch in the future, it would not work against an EXE that has had the LAN Fix applied to it. Any thoughts?

In any case, it's worth giving a try to. The problem was so frustrating.

Again, I appreciate your quick reply. Thanks so much.

Sure thing dude, always here to lend a helping hand :)

With regards to the fix itself, the .exe won't overwrite any of your current exe's as you simply put it into your cod5 folder and run it. You can make backups of the current exe's, but the LAN fix that I have, I just put it in my folder and it didn't prompt me to overwrite any files, but its always good practice to make backups of any files that can be potentially overwritten, I do it myself. Anyhow there will be a new patch released for cod5 at the end of January next year, hopefully fixing these LAN issues, but in the mean time, that fix will cure any LAN related problems :)
