COD4 Multiplayer Help

Hi All

I am new to COD4. I just started playing online 2 weeks ago . For some odd reason my ping is around 70-90 and the game works fine. After every 5 minutes it gets laggy and the ping goes up to 900 and then drops gradually and I can play fine again, but whilst its laggy I die

I am using HLSW to connect to the cod servers? Could that have anything to with the problem I am having? or is it Telkom that's doing this? or could it be spyware? I am using AVG anti-virus

I would appreciate the help cos it really sux to play this way!

It sounds like something could be running in the background and periodically is accessing the internet and as a result you are lagging. I would check what processes are running in the background, you can do this by hitting Ctrl + Alt + Del - what I tend to do is if I see a process I am familiar with, I Google it and 99% of the time I can identify what it is. Also get yourself a spyware cleaner, not sure what is hot at the moment but there is a very real chance it is spyware causing the problem. Also what I would do is get a program called bandwidth monitor, there is a 30 day trial version of it or a free bandwidth monitoring program. This will allow you to analyze the amount of traffic going through your connection. Leave your PC idle for a few minutes and watch the graph. If you see random fluctuations in bandwidth you know something is not right. Give that a try and ask if you need more help.

With HLSW you need to be careful. I think I read somewhere that it refreshes your servers in the background, even if you don't want it to. Make sure that you configure the program correctly, as it might be the origin of the problem itself

HLSW does refresh your list constantly. One of the reasons I stopped using it. Irritated the hell out of me. But I really don't think it uses enough bandwidth to notice it in game, or even cause you too lag. I would however suggest using the game itself to store and access the servers.

Thanks guys for all the Help. I realize now whats the problem. I had my browser open in the background. lol...Saix page continuously refreshes and that's what was causing it.

I closed the browser and everything seems to be fine . Let hope it stays that way!
