Someone went to write a Code 10 learners licence and apparently they were told they will do the Code 8 drivers since Code 10 is getting canned. Apparently there was a research that showed that most accidents involved Code 10 drivers.

Dunno about the research,all I know is only applicable to new Applicants - they have to get a separate Light Motor vehicle license. Old Code 10 licensees will be able to use it for Light and Heavy vehicles and renew said license

yup because nowdays people go for code 10 so they don't have to do parallel parking like on code 8
Thus an easy way to get your license

Code 10 (actually, they're not code 8, code 10, etc. anyway) isn't being canned. What they're going to do is not allow Code 10 drivers to drive cars unless they have code 8 as well.

In other words, having Code 10 will entitle you to drive a Code 10 truck, but not a car. You will need to specifically do a Code 8 test to drive a car.

Are you saying that if you already have a Code 10 (suppose you got it 5 years ago), they'll stop you from driving a Code 8 car?

Only new applicants will be required to get both. Afaik old licenses retain their exemption

Claymore gave me a fright there for a second. :) Just imagine the horror of booking for a licence. I read the whole thing here

So that is basically like having to do a motor-bike test separately too. Driving a car doesn't mean you can drive a bike. Clarkson in the Vietnam special proved that nicely for us.

The advantage of a Code 10 (C1) licence, is that you can tow a trailer heavier than 750kg (incl. caravans, etc), without having to do whatever else extra. That was worth it alone in the 'old days'.

Its a loophole they have closed, Code 10 does not have to do parallel parking etc in testing... Code 8 you have to... So you will still need a Code 8 for driving a car ....I'm fine with that!

New Licence details:
A1 = motor bike < 125cc
A = any motor bike
B = Car < 3500kg and trailer < 750kg
C1 = Truck and bus < 16000kg
C = Truck and bus > 16000kg (Old code 10?)
EB = car with carvan
EC1 = Truck with trailer
EC = Interlink or bus with trailer (Old code 14)

I've got a old code 10, so it's a C1 according to my licence card.

I had a code 10, and it's now classified as Code EC1 - better than I had!

You talking about two different codes. The "old" code 10 = EC1, which entitles you to pulling a trailer with a GVM > 750 kg. A C1 license only entitles you to pull a trailer with a GVM < 750kg, same as a B (code 08) license, i.e. code 10 truck with small trailer.

So da best thing to do is to just go for a code 8? I wanna write my learners next week.

It's about time they did this, code 10 car drivers are a danger to other road users (not all of them, but the majority that have never driven any kind of vehicle before are) especially in my town. In my town about 98% of the driving schools are code 10, they will all soon be going out of business when this happens.

What the standard license you get for a car, B? Wondering as I have a EB.
