Let me start off by saying that I know nothing about cars. I have found a car that I'm interested in but, it's a code 3. The reason given is that it was stolen/ recovered.

Is it possible to have this car insured and would the seller have proof of the reason for code 3?

I would stay away if I was you. Code 3 cars are really hard to sell and they also go for nothing. If you plan on driving the car till it falls apart then maybe but you still need to get it checked by the AA>

If it was stolen it should be marked as S.

someone i know went through vehicle clearance(seller) a 2nd time coz the idiots didn't remove the S the first time when clearance was done...

Was one of the few cars that got found in one piece. :) a week after.

Stay away from code 3 cars. You gonna battle with insurance and you might have problems selling it when you eventually decide to get rid of it.

Oh ok then. I just thought that there would be some kind of levels of code 3 with stolen and recovered being alright to sell/ buy.

But, thanks to both of you.

S&R will sell for about 25% of book value.

Code 3 accident could be a disaster waiting to happen. don't touch the car with a bargepole unless you are getting it for nothing and don't intend selling it.

R70k for that?!?!?!

I would be looking more at like R40k if you ask me...

Just to set your mind at ease, we offered R 25000 on an immaculate 2008 polo GTi that was S&R. The cars are worth nothing once they become Code 3. Great if you want to buy a car for Motorsport, however! :D

Isn't Cdoe 3 = accident damaged, the one to avoid, tough to insure and the 30% of book pricing?

While Code 2 = S&R, not *too* bad a buy?

S&R is treated exactly the same way as Code 3 Accident damage in the trade. both are considered unsellable and the only way to get rid of them is to find some sucker on Gumtree.

Code 2 as far as I know only means that it's second hand.

Nope

code1 = new
code2 = used
code3 = written-off (for whatever reason. could be S&R or FUBER'd)

I would personally stay away from Code 3's, though I have had a friend buy one and the car has been relatively hassle free. Let's see what happens when he tries to resell it one day.
