A lot of the sites posted, which have vid footage are not displayed properly on myscreen (eg lightshow posted on off topic) :( I see outlines of movement and lots of strange colours. I realize it must be a codec problem but how to fix it? How do I know which codec needs to be loaded?

Edit: Using Windows Media Player 10

download some of the latest codec packs. uninstall most codecs that you have and install the ones freshly downloaded.

I would also recommend getting another media player. There is nothing worse than WMP! I use Zoom player (some of the older versions) and it is awesome!

try to reduce the HARDWARE ACCELERATION from within the Media Player options... sometimes drivers also affect your visual quality of movies...

Drusk: Do a google for All in one codecs. I use it. Its only one installation file and installs all codecs that you need.

well, I think they always affect this ;)

lol... yeah, but sometimes newer drivers cause the video effect to appear washed out if your harware accel is maxed out. had that once and moving the slider slight off the hardware acc sorted it out.

You can get codec packs from me u nitwit just ask! U know where

One word: defilerpak

Lightweight (no bloat) and got codecs to play almost anything

get ace codec pack, just don't forget to disable lame.acm cause that is buggy.
Alternatively you can install vlc media player which plays everything and does not require you to install codecs seperately, its built in.

I second VLC, its excellent, although the volume control needs some attention
