Why does a cup of coffee in the evenings seem to keep me awake longer than if i have an energy drink (Monster Khaos)?

Because most energy drinks are after all just caffeine and sugar loaded.Yes they add a few marketing milligrams of other stuff to make it sound better but the key boost lies in those two ingredients.
Also while it does work and I prefer the taste of play ,don't use it often as it can be extremely detrimental to your health if used often.

Other energy drinks like energade, powerade etc are effectively sugar, salt, water and a bit of flavour and colorants.

A subsidiary of a company I used to work for was a soft drink manufacturer so I learned and experienced the manufacture of these things daily for a few months when busy with projects there.

Caffeine in a cup of coffee = around 100mg
Caffeine in Monster Khaos = 80mg

:wtf: how is this an answer to the Q ?

I could've been more specific as per clintza's answer but I was just pointing out that both contain the same ingredients so its becomes obvious that its just a case of whats providing more of the contents depending on brand or coffee/teaspoons added vs brands of energy drink.

At the end of the day its just down to concentration of caffeine and sugar in each. Some people add more sugar or coffe than others and some coffee beans may have more caffeine than others.

I recently started using Monster. It's great. It has a number of stimulants in there besides caffeine and they also have a low-carb version which contains only a teaspoon of sugar, if I calculated correctly.

Er ya,they say all sorts of things to market themselves, trust me I was in the industry,I know ;) I had many a chat with the lead phamacist/food technologist to know whats really going into these things and what makes em tick.

Heres a recent article that basically backs up what I have learned in the industry itself a few years back.

Opinions aside, it works well. I'm not prone to placebos. I tried Red Bull, Play and all those BioPlus alteernatives but it's rubbish. Monster is the only one that works for me.

Opinions aside its the caffeine/sugar ratio and concentration that may be working well for you,I'm not dissing or promoting any brand in particular. I'm just stating the fact that they ALL use caffeine and sugar to deliver the kick,if monster is the one that does it for you personally then cool ;)

Absolutely correct. Energy drinks are completely useless, except to give a sugar-caffeine rush which is basically the jitters. It keeps you awake longer because you are adding caffeine to caffeine.

From the site I used earlier for the caffeine grams you also have:

Guarana 200mg
Taurine 1000mg

Sugars 27g

By the way, I don't drink any of these things. I am not a coffee drinker. If I do touch one of these, or drink a cup of coffee, I can guarantee I will not sleep a wink! :)

I do get my "caffeine fix" from Coke though. But that is around 32g per can. And 39g of sugar!

^This. Red Bull makes me want to throw up. Play gives me gas (Which inadvertently keeps me awake). Monster actually gives me a buzz and keeps me active.

Does it not concern some of you how you become reliant on these things to get you going? Ages back when I used to be involved in retail there was a client who would come in every morning to buy a Red Bull. Should you not just be taking the healthier alternate of getting more sleep and possibly eating better?

I used to do a full days work for 3 years without anything at all.
For one week the tea lady here kept making me coffee twice a day and i felt bad if i didn't drink it. The following week i felt super drowsy and fell asleep a couple of times. Now i am 100% reliant on my 2 cups of coffee a day. If i don't have coffee (I don't usually drink it on the weekend) then i end up taking an hours nap during the day :p.

Perhaps you didn't read my post properly. I don't use the sugar loaded variant. I use the "low carb" version, which has almost no sugar and just contains stimulants, such as caffeine, taurine and guarana.

See above. I have a weak spot for Coke, though :(

It's not like we drink it all the time. I've only had it 3 times over the last few weeks to try it out and see how well or not it works. In an ideal world, we should all eat healthy and exercise regularly, but let's be realistic.

Just to put it out there, these energy drinks will not give you energy. It is a myth that plenty sugar makes you bounce of walls, and caffeine will simply prevent you from falling asleep at ordinary doses, but won't give you bucket-loads of energy. Drink them to keep you awake. Don't expect an increase in energy...
