Coffee

sleeplessness?

I think caffiene can also boost energy levels - often mixed with energy gels...

Everything in moderation as they say!

From memory, so don't blame me if its wrong:

Diuretic effect is non-existent in heavy coffee drinkers...the body adjusts.

More of a hypertension than anxiety thing...two slightly different concepts.

Increases risk of gout.

Your vasoconstrictor logic doesn't sound right to me, but not sure.

It should lower most cancer risks since it is an anti-oxidant.

Boosts overall immune system. This is a plus for most people, but if you have an auto-immune disease or chronic fatigue syndrome then stay well clear of coffee.

Also, coffee promotes inflammation.

Some of the benefits of coffee I know:

Reduces tooth decay
Reduces risk of diabetes
Reduces risk of liver disease
Reduces risk of Parkinson's disease
Coffee drinkers have lower rate of suicide
Reduces risk of certain gastro-intestinal cancers
Reduces risk of prostate cancer
AFAIK most of these are based on small studies which do not properly account for confounding factors like concurrent sugar intake etc.

May be bad for stomach due to alkalinity

Does not make much sense.

I've seen conflicting reports on the effect of coffee on cardiovascular health. Anyone know about this?

Last I saw it appears to protect against heart disease, but the hypertensive effect of it needs to be kept in mind.
Effects on mental performance I'm not sure: caffeine is a stimulant but also a vasoconstrictor so coffee causes an initial boost in mental performance followed by a dip as the stimulant effects of caffeine wear off but vasoconstriction remains. Not sure about this though.
Makes sense if you leave out the vasoconstriction bit. Brain vasomotor reflexes are way to complex to deal with here. Does have a role in the management of migraine though.

Curiously I drink lots of coffee yet my blood pressure is low, typically 90-something over 50-something. I often feel dizzy when getting up quickly etc.

That is a bit too low! IIRC your blood pressure ideally should be at 120/80

Also coffee seems to not cause insomnia with me. I can have a cup right before going to bed and when my head hits the pillow I'm out.

Same here, but out of curiosity do you drink real coffee or those cheap instant crap stuff ?

It shouldn't be higher than that, particularly the second number. A bit lower is fine.

Possibly due to a drop in glucose levels. Caffeine is best in small doses (which will depend on your current tolerance level) for improved mental performance.

It may simply interfere with deep sleep. So people end up perpetually tired. Which is fixed with more caffeine.

If you really wanted to stop then 48h of pain wouldn't be an obstacle.
The headache has been compared to a migraine, so I can sympathise.

I wish I could stop drinking coffee. I've tried but then I get awful headaches. Plus it's like I have an insatiable craving for coffee.
But if you really wanted to stop you could taper the dose.
