Diuretic

A diuretic provides a means of forced diuresis which elevates the rate of urination. There are several categories of diuretics. All diuretics increase the excretion of water from bodies, although each class does so in a distinct way. Wikipedia.

Coffee, being a Diuretic (or rather caffiene), I was wondering if anyone know the effect of this on further water intake.

For example:

John Doe drinks a large (500ml) cup of filter coffee.
10 minutes later he drinks a litre of Water -

How much of an effect would the diuretic properties of the coffee have on the bodies ability to utilise said water.

I think dehydration from caffeine is more of an issue if the caffeine is taken in pill form. Coffee contains enough water to mitigate much of the diuretic effect of its caffeine. Having said that, I sometimes feel a bit thirsty for pure water if I've had a few cups of coffee.

I'm curious to know what the long-term effect of caffeine and coffee on the skin is. Does it age the skin prematurely due to its diuretic effect?

Humberto speaks some truth! :D The amount of water is a cup of coffee will offset the loss caused by caffeine, same goes with beer. I'm also thirsty for water, but I suspect that is only because the coffee is hot and dries your mouth out. After a hundred beers, I will stil want a glass of water when I'm thirsty. :o

EDIT: Oh, and good coffee is awesome

Dude coffee and water and you will be pissing like crazy. Who would drink 500ml's of and then a L of water. Have a glass of water and a small mug of coffee. I have about 16 odd glasses of water spread though out the day and i don't pee very often but then i only have one cup of coffee in the morning and it's about 300ml of coffee.

I don't drink anything other than either coffee/grapefruit juice in the morning and water.

If that's the case why do we get hungover then?

I have to admit, I feel a little thirsty after a coffee. Usually have a glass of water with my coffee...

Because the hangover is partly caused by unflushed toxins in your system from the beer, especial Kakstle and the other mass-brewed beers. Also alcohol's diuretic effect is faster than coffee and you dump the water earlier and more often, which is why breaking the seal is always such a mistake.

So you reckon if you don't break the seal and not take a leak the whole night you won't get hungover? I think an experiment is in order!
