Colour Laser Munltifunction

The problem is, we need colour every now and then for certain things. Will even the B&W printing on a colour laserjet be expensive?
No bw laser is very cheap on a per page basis. Cheaper than anything else out there. A single cartridges cost a lot though...but also lasts way longer.

So howabout buying a mono all in one laser and then using an inkjet for colour?
That is likely to work out better in the long run yes.

Consider also, just using a photo printing service if its fotos. Better quality & less hassle.

Basically we don't print any photos. We print documents a bit. I also need to print slides for varsity which have colour bits on them. My mom also prints leaflets which are black and white, and some which have a small colour logo.

Put it this way, we currently have an HP Photosmart C8183 all in one, which has a lot of cartridges and is quite expensive to run.

We need a cheaper solution for printing and scanning, mostly text with some colour elements. What is my best option?

Say what? Didn't fully understand what you trying to say, but it sounds interesting, and I'd like to know more. If possible, please give more detail.

Many manufacturers have a sensor in the toner cartridge to force you to buy a new one when it has printed a certain number of pages. Basically, the printer sees that X pages have been printed, and it refuses to print further, saying "Replace toner". This even though there may still be plenty of toner left in the cartridge.

I managed to get around it by downloading a replacement firmware for the laser printer from some dodgy site on the internet, using special button sequences to get to the Debug menu, and then uploading the replacement firmware (twice or three times before it actually worked). Now my printer tells me that the toner is low, but it still prints.

Unfortunately, it is not only Samsung that does this. Many manufacturers have jumped onto this bandwagon.

I don't know about the brother that I am currently using (still too new to have printed a lot), but basically, the HP managed to print quite a bit more pages than the toner was rated for (AFAIK it was rated at 2000 pages on the black), and I never got less than 2700 pages out of it...

Just bought a Samsung 3185 Multifunction this weekend. I didn't need duplex or fax capabilities. It was R2400 @ Incredible Corruption. Good pricing on an original black replacement cartridge is R460 (Supposed to yield 1500 pages) & per colour cartridge is R405.00 (Supposed to yield a 1000 pages). Both the color printing & scanning quality is excellent!?! If you have another R1500 to spend you can obtain an HP CM1415 with network functionality built in.

How are you finding this printer?

The thing is the toner is like R500 a pop. To replace all 4 cartridges is R2k!!!

Manufacturers don't make money on the hardware, but on consumables. Any printer you buy will have 'introductory' cartridges installed. 'Introductory' => Half filled.

When last did you buy cartridges?!? Any printer you are going to buy inkjet or laser are VERY expensive. I'm sure that you've heard that printer ink is probably the most expensive liquid on the planet. If not, just Google it. This is probably why 'generic' cartridge companies are in business.

Any printer, ink or laser is not going to be cheap to run. The trick is to find what is the most cost effective way. Also, use the toner saving features of the printer e.g. Print in draft where possible. Some printers also waste toner when switched off and switched back on again, so it is then better to let it go into sleep mode instead of switching it off.

I for example have a R500 Samsung printer @ home to print any trivial document and only use the colour laser when necessary.

Before pressing the print button, ask yourself "Do I really need a hard copy of this?!?"

Did you have a look at the HP 6500 or 8500 inkjets? Last I was looking for a printer they were significantly cheaper per page than similarly priced, smaller laser printers.

I think maybe my problem is that our current printer is expensive to run andaybe it's better getting another inkjet printer that is cheaper to run. Epson seem pretty good in this regard.

Thanks I looked at them, probably going to get the 8500A. The cost per page is really good!

Samsung printers are junk

I got fed up with HP printers when I could not get an HP computer to communicate with an HP printer. I started looking at other printer brands.

For more than a year I was all for Samsung. Every printer we bought for over a year was a samsung, then they started breaking down one by one and were "uneconomical to repair" and thats when we went back to HP.

We had a colour laser Samsung and I think that one lasted less than a year. We now have a colour HP

If you are buying a printer then avoid Samsung - We have replaced 3 of the broken samsung printers with HP models, and I await the failure of the 4th samsung. In the meantime, 2 HPs (from the days before we switched to Samsung) are still humming.

At the end of the day HP quality and reliability is far superior to Samsung... when it comes to printers. Nothing wrong with Samsung LCD monitors - they are good.
