Hi,

My set up at the moment:

- Wireless router connected to an ADSL line (and nothing else)
- Main PC in the bedroom connected to the wireless router
- Nas device connected to my Main PC (Bridge)
- HTPC connected to wireless router

Main usage is HTPC connecting to main PC and NAS

I will buy a 1GB switch today and one of those powerline adapter.

What will be the best setup?

Should I use a different IP range for wireless / Wired?
Main PC and HTPC will still have to connect to the wireless network.

I Upgraded my ADSL router to 1gigabit, wired all my fixed PC's & HTPC's to it with two 1gigabit unmanaged switches at various points. I only use my wireless from my router for my cell, android tablets and laptops... I have two htpc's, on in my room other in the lounge, the lounge being one being my media store. 1 Gigabit all the way, no stuttering or lag or anything on a 24gig BDRip streaming from one end of my house to the other....

For you, what devices can run 1gigabit? your nas and main PC already talk at 100mbit, so your slowdown is the wireless, which ever way you go.... what is the speed of the wireless currently and what is the speed of the powerline adapter going to be?

I want the wireless to be for internet access only.
Laptop/cellphone/main pc and HTPC

Powerline will be 200Mbps (can't find a good price for the 500Mbps one, so hope the 200 will be enough) and everything else 1GB

Way I see it is your wireless router is the slow down.

Go 1 gig switch between your room PC / NaS / Powerline adapter. Then the other end of the power adapter to the HTPC . The fastest you will have is 200mbit if it can get that. But between the Room PC and NAS you will get 1gigabit. Then leave the wireless Router as internet access only with DHCP for the IP addresses.

Yes thats the plan!!!
my question was , should i run the network with 2 separate IP ranges? or maybe 192.168.1.1-10 wireless and 192.168.1.11-20 wired?

I dont think thats necessary, run them all one one range via the routers DHCP...

lol reading your post clearly, I see it is one IP range... lol

Just do IP reservation on the DHCP Router for each device...

Should i set up DHCP on the wireless AND the switch?

u getting a managed switch? ... never used a managed switch before... so not sure? I would run the whole network from one DHCP source only.

ok good point, I am getting an unmanaged switch.

So,how will the NAS get an IP address ?
I am a little confused...maybe i should just play around tonight.

Ethernet over power devices are garbage. I cannot stress this enough.

Ok, everything is set up :-)

I had to set up a static IP addresses for my HTPC and my NAS (Because, my wireless router is the DHCP).

Khanya: i got an Unmanaged switch.
tau1z: I am happy with the homeplug, 12GB 1080 MKV plays perfectly, and everything runs fast, and smoothly.

you are the luckiest person alive. IT sounds like you got the edimax devices. I have seen nothing but garbage response from them in multiple homes.
