Hi

I have a wireless network setup at home and its been working great for quite a while now. My config is as follows: (hope this makes sense)

Internet -> ancient old Telkom modem/Router (Bridge Mode) -> IPcop Router
IPcop Router -> Netgear DG834G -> PC's

I have spare unused AP, an ASUS wl-330g (http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=59&l1=12&l2=41&l3=0)

Someone mentioned a while back to me, thats its possible to extend the range of my ADSL by somehow peering the ASUS AP with the Netgear router.

so I would like to achieve the following config in addition to the above:

Internet -> ancient old Telkom modem/Router (Bridge Mode) -> IPcop Router
IPcop Router -> Netgear DG834G -> ASUS AP -> PC's

1. Technically, is the above possible in theory. What type of settings/routes would I need to make sure exists for this to work.

2. If possible (I'm sure it is) is it possible to do with the type of hardware I have.

The IPcop router is also the DHCP server and gateway and supplies DNS

Any help, pointers will be greatly appreciated.

TIA

I'm actually trying to achieve something similar. I have a new Telkom wireless model and a Netgear wireless router which i'm trying to connect together in order to avoid using cables to connect the pc in the grannt flat to the ADSL line in the house.

No luck yet :(

Hi, I have set up an ADSL billion router to a wireless surecom wireless router and then my PC connects to the surecom wireless router.
Setup is not as easy as I would have thought. The tricks I picked up to achieve this may help you discover the correct answer:

In your scenario when I say 'modem' I mean your Telkom wireless router/modem. When I say 'wireless router' I mean your Netgear AP.

1. Set the ADSL modem/router as the DCHP.
2. Switch DHCP off on the wireless.
3. Ensure you manually assign the wireless router an IP that is outside the range of the IPs assigned by the DCHP by your modem. E.g DHCP may take 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.100 automatically, so set your wireless IP to 192.168.1.101
4. Now the following are settings that worked after fiddling, some may not be necessary, others are. Folks here may tell you different but it works for me, and I gathered the info from the internet.
Change the WAN setting of the wireless router to the following:
Assign static IP
IP address: 192.168.1.101
Network Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: (same IP as your ADSL modem)
DNS: (same IP as your ADSL modem)
5. Set subnet/network mask for all modem, wireless router to the same (255.255.255.0)
6. To ensure communication is bidirectional between modem and wireless router I did the following on the modem only

This setting normally found under LAN or Routing
Set routing to RIP1 and direction to BOTH.

Soft reset both modems and it should work. Ensure that your wireless router does not restrict access by IP identification. Since it is now not assigning IP via DCHP, your PC may have a different IP and thus be blocked access on the wireless router.

To ensure everything is working while you test. I would switch off all security features on your wireless routers, such as the WEP encryption. Once your happy you can then work towards getting it all to work with an encrypted wireless connection
