I will soon have a need to acquire a Wireless Router than can handle both of (1) Telkom ADSL and (2) a 3G USB modem 'dongle'.

Reason is that I currently only have access to 3G for internet connectivity, and in our home we need Laptop (with wireless capability), and Desktop PC (via RJ45 connection) connectivity, simultaneously. The need for 3G AND ADSL connectivity is in case of signal / connection failure from one or other of the service providers (e.g. Telkom, or a mobile provider)

I know D-Link makes such a Router, and I think Mecer / Mustek also offers one.

Can anyone advise which is better, or what other brand I should get?

I've used the billion 7402gx before. I wasn't very impressed with it - it didn't seem to flawlessly switch over to the 3g once the adsl cut out. Lot of great features on paper but I wouldn't recommend it.

There is a new netgear (which I consider to be the most stable and easy to manage - I have a number of them at different sites) coming out, it was just released last week

I'll test it out once I get my hands on it.

Good luck - let me know if you try one of those others and they work well. Just one piece of advice though - they don't support all the usb modems automatically. Make sure you know which 3g modem you will use and check if it's supported. I have to flash the billion to get support for that new 7.2 vodafone one (can't remember the name)

Thanks for the input, and the warning to check 3G modem compatibility. I'm currently using a Vodafone K3765 USB modem which is a Huawei. I hope to get a D-Link router capable of handling ADSL and (via USB) the Huawei 3765 ... I can only hope it works, i.e. it is compatible with the D-Link Router. The Mustek-Mecer may be another option (they sell both the D-Link and their own branded dual ADSL / 3G USB router)

I doubt that you'll get a dual ADSL/3G modem that can fall over automatically on all the kinds of ADSL failures. Surely most of them would switch over if the ADSL can't sync or if the PPPoE connection drops.

I hope for Netgear's part that the router that owentb mentioned performs well, because lately the Netgear ADSL modems have been a big disaster.

hope that d-link allows some brains to be coded into it. i'd imagine you wouldn't be too happy if it used the 3G when the ADSL could have been used all because the native features didn't work properly
