Me again...

Random:

My friend is a student and is on a VERY tight budget.

He is looking for a desktop PC that just needs to run word, type out reports and surf the web a little.

He does not want to spend more than 4000, including EVERYTHING(monitor, keyboard, box, screen ect)

I was thinking about going into dion wired and looking at those combo deals they have.

Do you think they are worth it or should i rather advise him to get a netbook instead?

I got the following, a few months ago on special from HiFi Corp. :
Acer E3300 2.5GHz for R2,800 which includes a keyboard & mouse.
Was also vetted / OK'd by MyBB members beforehand :D .... and works well.

One week a few weeks after I got it, they included a monitor as well for about the same price, so check what they have on offer at the moment.

However, an 18,5'' monitor he can get for about R900, usually from HiFi Corp or Incredible Conn.
I got a 20'' one for R1k, so would still be within budget.

Do you know anyone with an account at Sahara? They have a combo special for R3499 ex VAT. Total system plus Windows 7.

Check out both Game and Incredible Connection for monitor prices. I just got a 21.5" Samsung from Game today for R1K for my wife - testing it tonight and need to decide if I should get myself one (the offer is till tomorrow though but normal price is R1200)

dont know anyone with an account at sahara but will ask around. thanks!

Will check game tomorrow :)

lg x140 netbook was on special till today for 2k

edit: @game

No not netbook. Worse bang per buck than a PC.

You can easily get a case for 2.5k, LCD for 900. Mouse keyboard 150. OS & MS Word is gonna be a problem though. OpenOffice should be fine though.

If you go CRT you can probably get the screen for <250.

Agreed.
Also, the PC is upgradable and I doubt whether the same can be said for the netbook.

well he did say it was for a student - office docs and some surfing
i think a netbook would be perfect actually

Depending on the University, those can be had for free. Tuks provide both Windows and Office to IT students so long as you have a valid reason. They don't really ask if you are an IT student tho so anyone can just walk in and get it. That said think the library also offers it.

I agree with the others tho, netbooks are overpriced, small screen, slow processor. Rather get a desktop equivalent Atom with dual core atom. Still think a cheapo PC can be put together that uses a normal processor and motherboard. Looking at the specials a while back from Esquire that is a fairly decent setup can be had for R4K that would obviously beat any Atom setup.

True forgot about that. "Typing reports & surfing" doesn't sound like an IT student too me though so he might not qualify.

Stellenbosch University would also be able to provide you with Office 2010 Enterprise edition, but it will cost you like $4 :)
or at least that was what my dad told me.
I'm not sure if you can get a copy of Windows via the University too OR if Stellenbosch's IT dept has the facility in place yet to hand out those licenses to normal students.

he is not studying IT, unfortunately.

i managed to build him a system around a core 2 due processor.

Total price was 3999.

Thanks for your help!

I did buy my macbook pro through tuks.

Got a good discount.
