Due to my current registrar decommissioning the domain management platform for co.za domain I had to find another. I contacted an afrihost agent and asked what service I should sign up for. After a lengthy discussion it became clear he was clueless. But I signed up for domain pointing and sent a details account of exactly what I needed. I then got an email with domain transfer instructions after I clearly stated that the domain hosting does not change, it remains where it is. Afrihost submitted the registrar change request which I approved and voila, they F*cked it up. For some reason, they have changed the DNS and not all my traffic is routed to Afrihost where my domain is NOT hosted, and never will be. What is so difficult that you cannot follow clear concise bullet pointed instructions @Afrihost-Gian @AfriGuy @Afrigirl @AfriFella. Now I have to spend more time trying to get you to fix this and explaining to my users why their emails does not work!

When you transfer a domain it's DNS management is transferred but not your records.

Get the nameserver details from your host and change the nameservers in clientzone>>hosting>>your domain>>domain settings >> DNS Management

It is not Afrihosts fault. It is just how domain transfers work.

Actually it is since I clearly stated what should happen. I did not just say transfer the domain, I gave explicit instructions. If I say that hosting will remain where it is how do you think traffic is going to be routed when you know that the DNS will be overwritten??

Afrihost can not prevent the name server update when a domain is transferred. That is what a transfer is, the transfer of the domain (DNS) management.

N0 they CAN make sure that the DNS is set correctly when they do the transfer. If they know it is a working domain and they know there is an active DNS record then ensure that it is updated once the transfer is done. Or at least inform your PAYING customer that they need to go and do it since you could not be bothered to do it. It is called customer service 101.

They can not just set DNS records, unless if you provided them. They will help you with that if you ask. Send the records or nameserver list to [email protected] and they will do it for you lickety split.

Propagation takes about 2 hours.

Missing the point completely. I never asked them to prevent the DNS change during the transfer. I never asked them to pull DNS records from the sky. What I expect as a paying customer is for them to say - Dear Mr customer, when the transfer takes place the DNS record will be set to route to us. Please provide the DNS records you would like to use to ensure that you have no downtime. And lickety-split, the transfer takes place seamlessly instead of me having to be surprised and then having to scramble to fix it. It is called customer service and it is provided to paying customers.

I am too lazy right now to screenshot it for you. Normally, if I need anything specific I ask the consultant

You will need to know your default A Records before editing. The records can be found and edited in your Afrihost ClientZone.

In the event that your domain is registered with Afrihost but is hosted elsewhere, you will need to edit the A records and MX records (Mail).

This rule applies vice versa eg: Host-Afrihost, Domain-External.

Kindly request and supply the records provided by your host company.

Yes thank you for all the advice. I know all of that, what I did not know was that my existing DNS records would be overwritten even though the domain hosting is not transferred and that my new domain registrar could not give a F about the fact that now none of my services work and I have to wait 24-48 hours for it to propagate after I did their job for them after the fact. PS. no, it does not take 2 hours lickety-split ;) @Afrihost-Gian used to have something that resembled support, but now I'd hang my head in shame to say that I provide support to my paying customers.

Oh forgot - asking the 'consultant' is what started all of this. As clueless as a nun in a whorehouse.

And to further demonstrate their incompetence this is what you get if you request a call back. Hint - there is no option to enter or selects call relevance yet you cannot continue without it.

TLDR - use a proper hosting company with staff that actually understand the technology they are supporting.

Eg. Absolute Hosting / Domains.co.za
I should have done my homework but I'm speaking to them now ;)

I set up the A records and MX record first and that propagated fast, set TTL to 600 in ClientZone. Then changed the name servers so while that propagate the domains services are running.

@Antono we apologise for the inconvenience caused. Have you been assisted?
Please do not use 'assisted' in such a wide context. I assisted myself, it is your 'assistance' that created this mess for me in the first place. And consider the 'inconvenience' an eye opener for me. Just when you think customer service cannot get any worse, you sign up for a service with afrimess
