Comet Lovejoy Now Visible

The comet is steadily climbing in the sky. Depending on your S horizon it could become visible from 02:30 onwards.

The downside is that it's moving in front of the Milkyway making it dimmer and more difficult to see.

Eventually in January it will become a late evening object, visible from 23:00 onwards. How bright (if still naked eye visible) it will be by then remains to be seen.

I've posted an animation of Comet Lovejoy over the 3 days I've managed to image it. You can clearly see the movement and steady decline in brightness. If you want to see the comet you'd better do so soon. It might not be naked-eye visible for too much longer and the Moon will soon interfere with observing too.

Unfortunately, the weather seems to be having the biggest say in the matter - still no clear skies in the forecast :(

I've uploaded some more images for the 28th, 29th and 31st. I had to take a break on the 30th because of windy conditions and lack of sleep - Comet Lovejoy 28 - 31st December 2011.

At times like this I wish I had a EQ mount in order to take some longer exposures, but they are too expensive for my current budget. Oh, well.

Went to sleep at 12, clear skys and stars where out. Woke up at 3am to look for comet and there where clouds everywhere......aaaarrrhhh.

I need to move to the karoo :-)

Sadly no, unless you want to try with a telescope. It faded rapidly until it was no longer visible with the naked eye by the 4th or so.
