Here is the deal. I've been looking for a car for a while now. I have considered various options but I am still undecided as to what I am going to do. I live with my with girlfriend of 3 year for a year now. She has a car that we are sharing. My car was written off in an accident a year ago and insurance didn't pay out (I did that 'clever' trick of having the car insured under my dad's name ).

So the time has come for me to get my own transport. The nicer the vehicle the more interest I will end up paying the bank. I opened a thread a while ago asking for car suggestions and got lots of good advice, but not enough to really help me make up my mind. I came up with the following options.

  1. Buy a new 125cc motorbike (Honda CBR125R9)
  2. Buy a code 3 rebuilt car from someone trustworthy
  3. Buy a crap new car (****ty golf, sparky)
  4. Buy a less crap new car (Renault Sandero)
  5. Buy a entry level new car (Yaris, Polo, Peugeot 207)

I am leaning towards the motorbike because I can buy it cash (R30 000). I live 8.5km from work and I wear casual clothes to work. On the other hand I can get a not that awesome car and pay it off over 2 years (I can afford to put R4000 towards car payments).

I could also just save that R4000 and save it towards another deposit if I really hate the bike.

Buy the bike now and then save to buy a 2nd hand car, but a more decent one. Then at least you can get a car with aircon etc. and you have a second car for the days that it is raining etc.

I was really tired when I posted that so my grammar = poop. Still, I dunno how your minds works pal :o

Yeah 1 then 5 sounds good. Don't forget insurance. (and obviously petrol, maybe maintenance etc)

Yeah, I have R6k that I can spend on a vehicle, 4k for payments 2k towards insurance. Then R800 for petrol.

Now the question is ... how many hours will it take me to learn how to ride a motorcycle? :D

its not sooo bad
just gotta be a whole lot more aware
you might wanna check out the thinkbike forums before you get a bike

Realistically it seems as though it will take quite a bit of effort to learn how to use a motorcycle safely. Why can't all choices in life be immediately clear? While having the best cost saving benefits, the motorcycle route also has the highest time requirement. Getting to work is such a pain without my own transport.

I was actually checking out Vuka scooters last night and seriously wondered why there is still a stigma attached to using them in SA. Jamie Oliver always scoots around on one! :)

Seriously though, the reason I had a look was the advert on the radio stating that you could get a phone and a Vuka scooter for R289 per month! That bike is real entry level but the ML150 at R13,000 looks great. I seriously would seriously consider it if I did not need a car for my job.

Ja, it is sad really. In South Africa people not only laugh behind your back, but they laugh in your face too. Hehe. A bike or a scooter is a decent way to get to work, as long as it isn't raining. The only thing that is scaring me is the fact that the wind blew my friend over many times while he was riding his motorbike. Well, that and the crazy motorists we have :D

My laptop would be stolen on the first day with a scooter...

Is it easy enough to learn over a weekend? I am serious. Its no use for me to buy one and have it stand for a month while I learn the ropes. This whole thing seems like a dangerous move to me.

do you have friends with bikes that can show you or know someone with a bike? where do you live cause maybe there is a place you can go to learn?
