Other than interchangable lens, is there a large difference?

I've been scanning different products and came across the Nikon P80 - not exactly compact - but seems to have quite a list of features! Yet - for the same price - one could get a Nikon D40 + lens ...

Sensor size, high ISO noise, sharpness (quality of the lens). Also, the more powerful processors in the DSLRs handle noise reduction better, generally outputs higher quality JPEGs, etc.

And of course, the flexibility an SLR gives you.

Also girls like the big lense ;)

Just being able to create whatever effect you want(ISO, shutterspeed etcetc) is bonus enough for me :)

Unless you specifically want a compact camera there is no reason to not get a DSLR. The difference in quality, especially when it comes to speed and low light performance will make all the difference.

Get the DSLR. Use one for a day and u will see what the fuss is about.

im currently looking for a decent point and shoot that will fit into my pocket, for those days where i cannot carry my DSLR.

I can see the use for a compact camera (esp the ones that shoot RAW) but not the bulkier "Advanced" ones.

Oh :/

Well here's the thing :

I also want something I can slip in my pocket, without carrying a bag or anything.

* When I do print my photo's, I print at the normal Jumbo size only

* I do want to have a depth of field and blur background on portraits. My 3x optical seems too small to do it, but my 6x has no issues.

* I'd like to be able to hold the shutter open to take darker scenes (or a higher ISO without the noise)?

Basically - I want the best of both worlds ;)

Well my cam does not even weigh 750g with lense :)

And I carry it everywhere :D

Nikon D60.

Canon G9/G10 or Panasonic Lumix LX3

Pentax K-m with a pancake lens would do that :)

Check out the Canon G9 if you can still find one. If I remember correctly, it has a manual mode.

Not to compromise the SLR argument, but you can do long exposures with low noise on most compacts. My Cybershot has no semi-manual modes at all, but I can set the ISO on it. I set it to 100, put it on a tripod, compose my shot, set the timer, and fire the shot. It usually opens the aperture all the way but with such a small lens that really isn't an issue. I generally get around 1 second for night shots like this with very little noise. JPEG artifacts is a bigger problem on this level camera.
