So I signed up for a service at Diamatrix. I chose them because I have been doing business with them for a long time and their service is excellent. However, they asked me for my ID documents and company registration documents when I opened up a new account with them. This is not a dig at their wonderful service levels, more about one of their policies that I believe adds unnecessary risk, and which more and more companies are doing.
Im not asking for credit. There are no FICA or RICA requirements. They say its to "protect" me... but really? I have to give my private documents to yet another company? Is everyone and the kitchen sink going to be doing this now? Where is the line? I dont know about you, but I get real nervous even sending that stuff to a mobile company, let alone a company I want no credit from.
Do you think everyone is jumping onto this ID document bandwagon now? Do you think this greatly increases identity theft risk? I trust Diamatrix with the data (even though its an unnecessary intrusion)... but what if Bobs Hosting who has a VPS, no security understanding or experience starts asking for it? How long until these companies are hacked (and they all eventually get hacked) and our company documents and identity documents are available online? How do I know my data is protected? If this is going to be the new "norm" Im going to stop doing business with many of these companies.
Am I allowed to ask for copies of their owners IDs and their company registration documents? Is it fair that this is a one way street?
I also accept that I could just be being paranoid, but I do feel uneasy sending such important documents which can be so easily used to damage you financially... to people that dont need them.
