Compaq Evo laptop freezing

When using the MTN Fastlink E220 USB modem to connect Internet Explorer/Outlook Express works fine then freezes after +- 5-10 min and the process is repeated after every restart. This is now the second modem, MTN swapped the first one as it was doing the same thing thinking it was a modem related problem. The the IT repair shop tried Windows Xp repair, Windows reformat, Windows XP reboot, new drivers, modem firmware updates without success. Modem works fine on other PC's . Serial number for modem is EO7NAB16A2101254. Is this a specific Pc/Modem compatibility problem which wont go away or can this be sorted?
Any suggestions would be most welcome thanks.

Might be the USB ports going into standby? In device manager disable power saving on all USB ports.

In device manager there is reference to various Universal Bus Contollers ie host controllers, root hubs, mass storage, composite device ect. Which ones specifically do I disable power saving?

I disabled power saving on all usb ports still no joy. Pc works fine but as soon as you click connect on modem pc freezes even if you do not open any applications.
