Compatible Vodafone (Huawei) K4605 modem 3G router

Hi all,

I've looked everywhere on the net for some answers on the below question and without any luck I thought I'd post it here...

Yesterday I renewed my 3G data line and upgraded to the latest K4605 modem.
Now before this I had a Novatel Ovation (unsure of model) modem, and this worked 100% in my Netgear MBR624GU 3G router. I had a suspicion that the new modem would not work in it, and it doesn't and I also doubt that Netgear will be releasing any new firmware soon...

So does anyone perhaps know which (reliable) router is compatible with this modem?

The other alternative is to make use of the wireless feature of the router only, and then use my notebook (with the active connection) as the gateway for all other wireless devices.

With new modems comes the wait for manufacturers to update their firmware. Best is to mail Netgear support and find out what the ETA is. They have already dropped the ball with a number of new ZTE modems.

If you head over the the Cell C forum you will see that the TP-Link guys are pretty up to date with modem support, perhaps they will have an updated firmware out soon. Their routers are also fairly inexpensive.
 
Havent done extensive tests in the better signal areas at home, but thus far only getting about 3.7 down and 1.8 up (according to http://speed.vodacom.co.za/speedtest/ ) It is still better than my previous Ovation modem.

Also not sure if our area has been upgraded to the latest network yet.
 
I'm still struggling to find any compatible router for the K4605...

I understand the Netgear MBRN3000 works with the K4505, does anyone know if it will work with the K4605?
 
Collegue of mine just brought me his K4605. It is NOT working on our Dovado 4GR (4.3.3 firmware). Hoping the 5.0 firmware will support it (will upgrade as soon as it becomes available on www.dovado.com/firmware)

I do have a Edimax 6200n (v2.20 firmware) at home which I will bring in tomorrow and post if there is any news (The 6200n is available from Miro for below R600)...
 
Unfortunately the K4605 is NOT compatible with the Edimax 6200n (at least NOT on v2.20 which is the latest)....
 
I actually took my 4605 to one of the local distributors of the dovado routers to test, and even their latest beta version of their V5 firware wansnt able to connect with it. Sees the modem, but cannot connect. The log files were sent to the developers in Switzerland, and their priority is with incorporating their own local modems first and can only start looking at the 4605 later on.

I couldn't wait indefnitely, so I took a knock and went for the tp-link router, with a k4505 modem - half the speed, but at least something. Will now sell my k4605 and netgear mbr624gu router.

I was wondering if people who own routers which support the 3G USB stick check if their routers support the newer modems? Or do they just go ahead and upgrade to the latest and fastest modems they can find?

It's just something I would check before I go and apply for a new modem. Otherwise I'd just continue using my old modem or get a newer modem that is actually supported by my routers firmware.

Now why didnt I think of that...?

Yes, I did check that long before my upgrade was due - But when I went for my upgrade, a few days after they launched the 2G+2G deal with the K4505 (that was the modem I intended going for, also supported by my old router) but they didn't have stock anywhere in the east rand. One of the shops made me another deal for a good price, but it included this modem so I went for it.

And yes, I have been using my old modem in the router (as it's a convienience for multiple devices) while mailing suppliers for firmware updates etc (which, btw, Netgear will not be doing soon for this modem) But then why should I sit with the 7.2 stick when I can use the 21 mbps stick? That is why I opted for this solution...

I have a Planet WNRT-625G 3G Wi-Fi router. I have been using this router for a while know with absolutely NO problems.

I got my K4605 USB modem just over a week ago and also could not get the modem to connect on the Wi-Fi router. I sent an email from the Planet website and was contacted back via email from Taiwan the same day requesting status reports and bug reports from the Wi-Fi router. I sent the information requested and two days later received a beta version of firmware to test. Still had no luck and again sent the status and bug reports. Not even a day later I received yet another firmware version to test that worked perfectly. This is a company that I will defiantly recommend for the quality of products and fantastic service.

Just got my K4606 USB modem & 8ta 10G promotion sim. Everything works well but need a 3g router now. The WNRT-625G looks very affordable (R450 @ scoop). Can you send me that firmware please?
 
There have been so many arguments around routers to use with various 3G modems... Have we reached a verdict of which router is the one to get that will support the most devices? I'm leaning towards TP-Link. I bought myself a DLink DIR-451 (which I will be selling shortly) and was very disappointed when I discovered that it does not support my Vodafone K4505-z. I emailed DLink US (seeing as DLink SA's site is permanently down) and they are not planning on bringing ou firmware that supports my modem. Just like that.

So, in order so make the most of the 2.5KB cap VodaCom is so graciously giving, I'll be getting the TP Link ;-)

+1 on the TP-Link. Even if it doesn't support your modem, they have a USB sniffing tool with instructions that you can use to create a bin file for your modem to use on the router. There is a local supplier giving a special discount on the TP-Link if you're a mybroadband member.

See post #12. I bought the Planet WNRT-625G its great value for money! Supports K4505 & with beta firmware even the K4605. Dealer price is R450 (+-R660 for public). its wireless N and got great range - works perfect
 
Just dropped said supplier a mail.

My DIR-451 works fine, but only with the E220 which was used in 205 BC to Skype with Pharao. The K4505-Z and E1820 are a bit more... um... sophisticated ;)
 
Yea verily, the supplier has confirmed the discount you have mentioned! Quite a substancial discount too!
 
Whoohoo! Happy days! I saw that I can upgrade my work contract and get a K4605, then I'll just rather use the K4505 for work and the K4605 at home!
