Complaints VS Victimisation

So here goes, just interested in your opinions.
A while back I had lunch at a company’s cafeteria while being on a course they presented. The food was disappointing (Bad) seeing the caterers posters everywhere displaying gourmet good food. So me and my itchy fingers send a complaint to the catering company (Via my private email). This was the beginning of a wooden spoon award in the making.
Everyone from the catering company, including the company who uses them replied and was up in arms because I dared to complain and didn’t use the correct protocol of first talking to the company representative or the person in charge or whoever . Now seeing that they have my name and know who I am (I worked for them years back) , I even got an email from the companies CEO who is up in arms and demands further explanation and meetings etc…
So, voice your opinions regarding this ?

Craziness, I work for a company that makes consumer products and we are encouraged to send complaints in our private capacity rather than internally. A decent company wants to hear complaints so they can improve.

Tell the CEO you would love to have meetings etc, but the cost is R1500 per hour per meeting since you are now being a consultant and helping to fix their crap food product.

So they don't care about the quality of the food and why is was/is bad, they care most about the processes for complaints? Says a lot...

Guess it also depends on the nature of the email sent.
If it was a chilled "Hi, used your canteen, wasn't great, maybe look at improving xyz" vs "Hi, everything sucks, a complete joke, screw everyone, **** you" type, that might raise hackles.
