Hi Guys.

I am desperate for some help.
I subscribed to the Telkom Simple package and on Saturday the technician came to install the new line and confirmed all was okay.

Then yesterday I bough a handset but the line is dead, I tested the handset at work and the handset is working, if I phone the line [the number the technician gave me] the line is ringing and Telkom confirmed from their side the line has already been activated.

Now why is the line dead how can I get past this so I can get hold of their call centre to give me my ISP username and password so I can start using the ADSL ?

But 1st things 1st what could be the reason for me not having any dial tone on my side when I connect the handset ?

Please help I am so frustrated by their callcentre telling me all is good and the line is active.

Regards.

It sounds like a cable has come out inside the phone socket. If you are able, put a multimeter across the incoming wires and see if you get in the region of 50 volts DC. If yes, then crappy cable to handset, if no, then call Telkom's repair dept.

Did you install a pots filter when you connected your handset?

Yes the technician installed it when he was doing the full installation , he actually asked whether I am going to use the line for voice and data ...

Thanks , yes I actually tried to log a fault and got this message this morning ...

The service is already part of a network outage.

So lets hope when they sorted this issue that my line will be working as well.

Are you going to leave this site as soon as you get help?

I have been frequenting this forum for a while this is just actually the 1st time I needed to post here as I was out of ideas what could be the cause for my issue

That means that either the cables feeding your area were stolen or damaged. To make sure ask your neighbors if they have a dial tone

Okay just as you suggested spoke to a business owner close to me apparently cables has been stolen.

Hi There.

The lines have been fixed and all is up and running pretty happy about it thanks for all the help.
Now I have another question when I pick up my landline to call the noise on the line is quite high [high pitched noise] meaning when I tried to call the callcentre I could hardly hear the agent on the otherside , but I have a filter installed the techie did it when he did the line installation, and my ADSL connection didn't drop when I picked up the phone, the filter he installed is the standard Telkom filter, any ideas what could be causing the noise and how I can reduce it ?

Thanks again guys.

You need a filter that is what a filter does filters the noise from the ADSL.
Is it a buzzing noise or a cracking noise ?? if buzzing filter needed.
The filter goes between the phone and the line .(do not filter the ADSL)

Hi.

It's a buzzing noise , a real loud irritating buzzing hehe, do you maybe have a link to a site that sells or describes these so I can start my hunt for one of these ?

Thanks again.

Did you not get one with your MODEM ??
If not you can get one at the Telkom store about R50

Just check you jack plug to see if there are 2 outlets if not you will need a slitter to.

Yes I did and it is installed that's what I don't get surely the line noise should then be a lot lower, I have the DGN2200 modem/router.

My setup is --> line goes into line-in on modem plug --> line-out goes to filter --> filter then has a part that goes to modem and other part goes to telephone so not sure if there is another part that is missing , this is the way the techie installed it ...

Sounds right, those filters dont 100% eliminat the noise but it should be tolerable.
Check the diagrams i added to my last post .
May be the filter is faulty .
