Completely Confused :/

Im in quite a dilema here. I have 4mb atm but im using the oooold ADSL Router pots (telkoms one), my mate told me this router supports a max speed of 1mbs. My line syncs at 992 downstream and 384 upstream on my telkom router which is understandable since it only supports that. So i got a 4 port mecer router from a friend, it says on the box it can support up to 8mb so im thinking awesome. I log onto the router settings and i check the status and my line is only syncing at 640 down, so i restart it then it syncs at 700, restart again and syncs at 736. So i restart a few more times hoping it wud go up but it doesnt, stays round the 700 area. How is this possible? any replies wud be appreciated

mmmm... 5.6Mbps (700kBps)

Maybe they are trying 8Mbps and you're to far from the exchange to get 8.

The VCI and VPI set correctly? VCI = 8, VPI = 35. You'll find that on the WAN page where you enter username and password, on the left.

Maybe they are trying 8Mbps and you're to far from the exchange to get 8.

The reverse I fear - he's too far away from the exchange and they're stepping him down from 4.

The DSL Up to 4096kbps service has 4 sub-profiles, which are used to stabilize customers' service that experience re-synchs (service interruptions) on their ADSL lines due to last mile distance, noise and attenuation. Therefore customers that experience problems on the service may be accommodated on any of the secondary profiles below:

A. min sync rate: 640kbps; max sync rate: 4096kbps
B. min sync rate: 640kbps; max sync rate: 3072kbps
C. min sync rate: 640kbps; max sync rate: 2048kbps
D. min sync rate: 640kbps; max sync rate: 1024kbps

Ive got a Router that supports 8Mbit, and im right ontop of my exchange... If they testing 8Mbit I would know bout it

thanks for the replies. yeah the VCI and VPI are set fine. i just dont understand how my telkom router syncs at 992kbs (always it doesnt change) and then with the mecer one it chops and changes :/ and it wont even go above 750

Is this true? I have that router as well, and honestly have not noticed a difference in speed since I upgraded from the 512kb line to the 1Mb line. Just did the test on speedtest.net and got 495kb/s download and 307kb/s upload which is fairly normal for my test results - but is this normal for a 1Mb line?
