My brother is moving in Jackal Creek in a few days and they offer 1GB ADSL internet. It's got an ethernet plug on the wall.

I'm just curious as to how normal complex internet works? Does he still need an ADSL modem? Username/password?

The stupid thing is the location ; they put it near the front door :/ BUt at least it's available.

Normally just ethernet striaght into you pc or router... noramlly complex inet dog slow

Our complex has that sort of system as well. It's basically just an ethernet jack in the wall which you connect your PC or hub or whatever to and an IP will be assigned automatically. The speed, latency and reliability is pathetic though - it's no substitute for proper DSL. I also imagine if you want to "top-up" after that 1GB is depleted it'll be at a less-than-fair cost.

Personally, I have a 3GB and 2GB SAIX account and when they're chowed I use the residential connection until the end of the month, so it's not all bad.

Don't get too excited I know the place. The internal network is very fast fibre based and is used to carry the DSTV feed for each unit too BUT backhaul is some kind of Microwave link which is much better than the single adsl line they used to use to feed 1000+ units but the speed you can expect is around 20 - 30 kbps.

They have a very badly configured PPPoe server which drops your connection every 10 to 15 mins so any kind of streaming, gaming, downloading large files is out of the question. You don't need an adsl modem just a normal router to do the pppoe auth or if you have one pc just plug it straight in.

There is no option to get an ADSL line as smertvillage did the internal network and you are not allowed to put up a WIMAX antenna (but by all means hang your washing anywhere you please :) )
