Hi guys

Do fibre providers/re sellers handle the costs differently when rolling out fibre to a complex vs a normal standalone residence?

I see deals where you get free connection and activation plus free router.
In our complex we get free installation but R999 connection fee and we have to buy the router for R549

Is this about right? MFN is the fibre provider and Initio the ISP

Thanks

It could depend on the contact the Complex has signed with them, if they have signed a exclusivity deal then you most of the times get it for free if not then it's usually a paid for thing as you could move from them at anytime.

There are many variables I would think, and it would likely be different for a apartment complex situation as it's going to come down to what the Body Corporate agreed to.

In a free standing residence the fibre providers might want a certain level of buy-in from the residents in a certain radius before they proceed. Or it could be they need buy in from the HOA if it's for free standing houses in a gated community.

^^ This is my observation as an end-user, hopefully someone else has better insight than I do :)

I'm guessing the ISP only incurs one installation cost for a Body Corporate (single stand alone property) whereas with a standalone house they will incur costs for each house

so maybe as a result of this economies of scale they are able to offer installation discounts

I think this is also one of the reasons fibre roll out is so slow, as a lot of newer complexes are popping up and they actually have no routing for cables from external sources, also trying to get an entire complex to buy in seems difficult. I know a few years ago I tried to get mine and a lot of the people were like oh but we have 3G... I am probably still the only person with ADSL in my complex.

Did you mean the fibre provider incurs an installation cost? Speaking under correction, when it comes to the ISP then there's an activation cost, there's nothing to install as the fibre provider does that.

Wouldn't the trustees decide on installation of infrastructure for the entire complex(body corporate), and barring objections from the owners/BC collective then the installation would proceed?
