I have a Dell Latitude laptop, put it down on a sort of mohair? table cloth and this caused a short from the docking port as it instantly turned off and will no longer power on.

Does anyone know of any of anyone in SA that can diagnose and possibly do repairs for these types of issues?

Essentially looking for a person or company who can carry out component level repairs.

Thanks!

Where are you based?

Perhaps something had spilled into the mohair and was not visible to you. All it takes is one drop between the right connectors to cause a short.

Don't know where you based but our company uses Mosfet Computers in Pinelands, Cape Town for all our out of warranty repairs for laptops, printers, etc. They work down to component level. We just had great service from them over the years and will go out of their way to try and repair a faulty device.

You sure it shorted? Sounds like it could have overheated if you blocked the vents. Could also be hair in the fan depending on the fan placement. If the fan won't turn it may not power on.

Sounds logical however the laptop was only on for a minute or two before I placed it on the table/cloth and it just turned off. No joy since then.

It was bone dry, i'm not entirely sure if it was mohair but some sort of hairy material so was thinking that it had enough conductivity to cause a short.

Thanks for this, will try to give them a call and see if they can assist.
