While cleaning up my email, I came across a pricelist sent to me by a retailer in Port Elizabeth. These were prices that already included VAT and mark-up for the shop! How far we've fallen since then...

@Jan maybe you can depress us all with an article comparing things over the years.

In 2011, R10,000 got you a beefy machine. In 2020, it barely covers the cost of a Core i3 setup with a mid-range GPU.

And your salary from 2011, does that also make you sad?

R5500 a month was liveable at that point. I did waste quite a bit back then, but as a junior IT tech working at a small shop it was a good starting point.

Ah man, that brings back memories

Here was my first ever new PC that I had built up, also back in 2011:

The difference is back then US$1 = R6-8 so the local currency had better buying power, you were a richer person back then even though you earned less...
darem is ek nie 'n "ou fokker" wat op "sy stoep" sit en kla or gisterjaar nie.

at least you got warranty on the GPU still..

I think some kid from Algoa Park bought it off me on Gumtree years ago when I got my 970. Thereafter, I think I got my 1070 but I sold that PC last year and haven't bothered to build another one up

Doesn't seem to bad after considering inflation.

Also think it's become more feasible to buy bottom end. i.e. Even the shittiest PC will do fine with office tasks these days. You can basically get away with less if you're not gaming
