Can someone please shed some light here on the differences? I just had an installer come and install my hardware, and he advised not to use the AR HDMI cables (x2) I had bought, rather to use component video cables? He said at 720p component is the way to go?

From what I can see, these cables connect my dvd player to my AV receiver, to my plasma.

My hardware is all yamaha, and a Sinoteq 50' 720p plasma screen.

What are the advantages of these 2 technologies?

The techie was talking Bull$h!t

Don't go buy other cables, the HDMI is fine.

Component cables can be used over a longer distance than HDMI IIRC.

HDMI can carry sound as well.

If I've already got Component and it's working fine, should I get HDMI instead?

Only got a 720P LCD, and my sound is through the AV Receiver, not through the TV.

HDMI is audio/video and copy protection all in one. Component is video only (3 cables) with the only difference between the 2 being the possibilities for longer runs with component cables, and the fact that the one carries a Digital signal and the other a Analog signal.

There is no noticeable difference in picture or sound quality, perhaps if you pull out professional test equipment, but otherwise none.

So 1 cable for HDMI versus 4 or 5 for Component and Audio should make the choice obvious.

So yea, he was bull$hitt!ng.

HDMI is fully digital & can carry 7 or 8 channels of digital audio (uncompressed) together with HD video.
Component can only carry video on a analog signal.

On my Sinotech plasma the component looks better. The colours look more natural. I must add I didn't buy a Pick n Pay special, I had a component cable made up for me by an AV specialist. My HDMI cable I got from a computer shop.

I also did a test with a 32 inch (I think) LCD screen. The component output using Pick n Pay cables from the dvd player was lots better than the HDMI output from the graphics card on the pc. Again the colours looked a lot more natural than with the HDMI.

For me, component FTW.

I think thats more due to the your source. If you take 1 source with both component and HDMI, and view them on the same plasma/LCD, I dont think you will notice a difference.
