Compulsory military service: EFF

The failed carpenter wants to invade Botswana and have his ass kicked again.

Everything that will cost money that we don't have. Brilliant logic from the EFF again.

Besides...I'm pretty sure the constitution won't like that idea (I hope).

I for one am glad I didn't have to go to the army. Didn't make me any less of a disciplined man. Career wise it's a wasted year.

I love the idea of conscription. The problem though is that bulk of this country's population is not even on the database. So they won't get any mailed letters...

But the idea, I like it.

It's not just about discipline people keep missing that. You are taught very important life skills that you can't learn anywhere else. Back in the day of conscription lots of lost youngsters ended up finding their careers in the Army, artisans or Medical engineers, Engineers, Doctors and the likes. Couple with that some weapons training, fitness, and survival technics. It's all a win win.

I think the basic idea is good but in most countries conscription was cancelled - mostly due to religious or philosophical grounds. A better idea of an alternative to military services was introduced by Austria/Switzerland as "Zivildienst" or "civil service", where people could opt to join emergency services or health care as an alternative. Many people struggling with finding a job used the civil service option as an entry into the job market (i.e. hospitals, fragile care, charities etc).

An interesting part of the Austrian "civil service" was that although it was a constitutional right, you had to explain your reasoning in front of a commission and only exceptional cases where allowed to skip military services and if granted, the applicant received a weapon ban and was not allowed to carry any sort of weapon. The ban was eventually lifted so that people could join the police force or security services, provided that the applicant made a declaration that their conscientious doubts are over.

But...but...we don't have a working post office either.

This is exactly right! I hated it while I was doing it, but in hindsight I can see how valuable it was. For one thing – it taught me my physical limits. I would have given-up if it was only up to me. Being driven by the SADF beyond anything I thought I was capable of, taught me what I was capable of. It is also a great leveller, differences in upbringing are standardised according to consensus reality (at the time). I regret not exploiting the SADF for career training (I just wanted to get it over with).

Are they planning a military coup?
Not the worst idea on earth. The military can be trained and deployed to community work, construction of infrastructure, running clinics, providing policing services. Better than having all these young people lying around doing nothing if they can't find regular jobs.
Also will teach them to do their own ironing, which is always a good thing. My husband can iron a shirt like a pro.

This is true... provided we never have to go off to war.

I'd hate to have to be fighting a war the EFF decided was worthwhile.

I'm still not interested in going to the army. I don't kill animals, let alone shoot at humans. I hate guns...it just won't work.

No one is asking you to be shooting anyone. But you will know how to if it should happen. Think House robberies and the likes. The biggest problem though is that these criminals would be trained too

Be honest, you don't like PT :D

so they're preparing you for nothing when they train you to shoot? :p

i think it should be voluntary forever

The aim is to be prepared to kill something yes. Training does kill anything though. Unless you do these drills with current SANDF soldiers :D They manage to blow each other up with AA guns...

Not really feasible, it would cost way too much. The defence budget is too small to fund any sort of conscription, it would have to increase quite massively for it to work. Instead they should look to better encourage the younger generation to enlist, we need a motivated professional army, not a conscription one.

No ways they will, or are planning to do any of these good things. Fatboy just wants his own army so that when the time is right he can do as he pleases. Much better than having to deal with any uppity boers and other assorted whiteys not willing to comply with the new rules of SA 2.1.0

We are already worse off than Zim, except in one aspect. Some of us still have money.
For one thing, the load-shedding in Harare is a walk in the park compared to the load shedding here.
