Computer Freezes or gets BSOD

Hi all

So I recently built a new rig and everything seemed fine. But every so often my computer freezes or I get the windows 8 Unhappy face BSOD, I noticed this mainly happens while gaming.

I have overclocked my CPU (i7 4770K) to 4.2 Ghz using the Asus AI Suite auto OC Feature, I have also overcloked my gfx card not by much considering it can be overclocked a lot more, allowing 105% power draw using the EVGA Precision X software. I also bumped the voltage of my RAM from 1.5 volts to 1.65 volts, tried running memtest and came back with no errors, also I have run MSI Kombuster for 15 minutes to test the GPU after OC'ing and it was fine, the temp never went above 65' C.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Interesting thing I've found is that they're not displaying the error codes associated with the BSOD. Your next best bet is to check the computer's event logs.

Generally BSODs are caused by driver or graphics library conflicts or errors (re-installing helps), faulty RAM (run MEMTEST to check). I assume since you've overclocked, you have been keeping an eye on the temperatures of your hardware under load. Just in case you haven't though - ensure that the hardware isn't being forced to shut down by excessive heat. That may cause a failure resulting in a BSOD.

As a general troubleshooting tactic, remove, clean and re-insert the RAM and graphics card.

Hope that helps!

Surely error codes or some form of a description is shown when it blue screens? If it does, telling us would be helpful.

The first thing I'd do though, is set everything back to stock speeds, and see if it happens again.

I would agree with Mr Norris.First see if your system is stable with everything at stock for a few days before starting your OC.

!

Could I clean it out using Surgical spirits from Dischem and using some ear-buds?

The error code I get is: WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR and then it reboots.
I have been watching the temps, my CPU idles around 33 and under load jumps up to around 70 degrees.

I ran at stock speeds for a while, perhaps 5 days but it still happened. Could it a bad install of windows 8.1? It is cracked so could the fact that it's not legit cause issues? I do have a legit copy of Windows 7 Pro I could install.

Clean contacts on RAM and Graphics Card with soft pencil eraser, not surgical spirits.

Install legal copy of Windows 7.Why install a non legal copy of an operating system when you have a legal copy of another.

Uninstall all that rubbish bloatware from Asus. As a matter of fact, re install the OS rather.

Anything that has got to do with overclocking is best done the long way.

Sorry to derail, you mention Win 7 is better for gaming rather than Win 8, I find the opposite to be true, is this with older games?

I got the same behaviour with overclocking.. not even overclocking but aggressive memory timing. I think I ended up running at 800mhz although the RAM and mobo should do more (don't remember the exact details).

What seems to have been the issue was I was using Asus AI Suite 3 to automatically overclock my system, so I took the time to learn about all the settings in the UEFI and overclock manually and that seems have solved the issue. I played skyrim last night for around 4 hours perfectly while previously I couldn't get past 30 minutes.

Also should I use Adaptive or manual voltage for the best stability when overclocking? I would like to be somewhat eco friendly :p

And I thank you.
