It seems like the big computer makers are afraid of the market driven rise in sales of netbook ranged computers. A netbook is a notebook cousin but smaller, less powerful and usualy designed around mobility including the whole shabang of wifi options and often also 3G and relates solutions incorporated.

I can understand the fear of these PC makers to some degree as the margins on cheaper and smaller equipment tend to get really tight and to top it off the competition is in there for the killing as well. Consumers are smiling all the way with initial offerings like the ASUS Eee PC coming in strong and other manufacturers following suit with better and sleeker models. The mobile phone makers seem to be chasing from the bottom and the notebook moguls seem to be chasing down from the top. At some point the technologies are bound to make for an interesting clash as the mobile phone makers tended to stay out of the computer business to a large degree and the computer parts folks stayed out of the mobile device arena.

It is like two dogs at different ends of a spaghetti string. At some point they will meet and consumers can stand to win some more in the resultant fight. Just a theory.

Most likely what will happen is that the manufacturers need not be worried at all. More affordable goal oriented computers will only enable the uptake of such devices in markets that previously didn’t exist. Those markets may well be bigger revenue barers than can be predicted just yet.
