So Xmas has come and gone and now you are stuck in that twilight zone between it and New Years. The best thing to do in this quiet time, if you are not on holiday somewhere exotic might well be to do something constructive. Here are a couple of creative computer projects you can jump in to if you want and have the time. This is just short list of things you can attempt to get done in the days to New Year and most of them can be ticked off as part of the preparations for the new year on our doorstep.
It can rank right up there with cleaning the house, garage or whatever needs cleaning to help the spirit feel cleansed as well. Here are some ideas:
Build a wireless network for your house
Cable is better for many reasons including speed through walls and such but if you are not intent on transferring large volumes of data daily then a wireless network is practical and easy to install and run. Most laptops will already be Wi-Fi ready and your desktops just need a simple USB Wi-Fi dongle each to get on the Wi-Fi network. You will need a wireless access point to unite them all.
Get a link going between your computer and gaming console
A console can do so much more when interacting with a computer or Internet connection. Go the extra mile and set this up today! You can play music and videos from your computer on your gaming console. Check it out! Support varies depending on the console but the best would be Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Turn that old computer into a jukebox for the entire family
If you do a little research you will find some fine true Jukebox applications for your preferred operating system. Here are some great solutions for Linux that can be operated over the home network using a web browser. You have no idea how awesome this can be in the family context!

Set up a Linux server for the house
Because Linux is free and so very-very powerful you can really use it for plenty of interesting applications. You can set up a file server that can be access from any pc on your home network. This can make expanding storage for the entire family a no brainer. You can run game servers on it or use it to regulate your internet traffic and act as a firewall between your home network and the greater Internet. The applications are literally endless!
Set up a LAN game event with friends using open source games
There are tons of free to use games online that can be played on a home network. Get a couple of friends over and have some fun.
