Hi guys,

Just like to get some advise or actually just to confirm my suspicions as to what is causing this.

Recently I got a new mobo for my pc, which I've now swapped out the old one for. Now the OS hard drive was not reinstalled, I pretty much just plugged and played but every now and then ( and at random moments ) the pc turns off and reboots. Sometimes its frequent, other times hardly ever happens.

Now I presume this is due to windows and the new motherboard conflicting since windows was not re-installed. Could this be the cause as one thing I hate in this world is windows reinstallations.

CPU/Mobo temps are good sitting around 35/34 CPU/Mobo so it cant be that.

Thanks in advance.

Re-install Windows. Whats your prob with re-installing though? I do mine every 6 months. No hassle. Nothing better than a clean pc running on an SSD.

I think you must remove the chipset drivers from the old mobo and install the new ones from the new mobo.

Edit: If problems do persist after the above, I strongly recommend you format and reinstall windows.

@Camikaze It's just a shlep, getting all the programs back, installing drivers and generally getting it back to the way I had it.

Could also be something conflicting in the machine take a look carefully and see if anything is out of place. You can also try pulling one thing out at a time like 1 stick of ram and boot up see what happens then gfx card boot up see what happens and so on... It sounds like something is shorting your system it can be so small like your fans pin has come out the molex.

I have to agree with OP, re-installing is a schlep and IMO re-installing is for noobs.

@OP Try some registry cleaner software.

Hi not to sure which windows you are using but search in the system folder for sysprep run it and click on the generalize option. It should remove the old drivers and install new ones.

Use a registry cleaner and you will wonder in two weeks time why that damn program does not work anymore.

You have any better suggestions?
Personally I'd take breaking one or two programs with regclean over a re-install any day.

@OP You seeing anything in event viewer for clues?

Boot with windows disk and run repair setup. Go past the first repair option, and on second option choose repair. Obviously you don't format either ...

What OS are you using?
Windows 8 shouldn't have that issue

Anything below that though, you will have to format unfortunately.

This will be #2 on my try list... will let you know if it works.

Reinstall.
Thought as much, thanks. I'll just try the other quick ways first... failing that I will be going through the 1-2hour procedure of getting my system back to the way I had it.

No idea why no one has said this but I'd just uninstall all the drivers currently on the hard drive, and install the new motherboard drivers, and see where that gets me.

Use this to help you with it: http://www.guru3d.com/content_page/guru3d_driver_sweeper.html
Thanks, Ill give this a try.

Thanks, hopefully it saves me from the dread of a reinstall.

Windows 7, Last resort I will format and re-install.
