Professor Bob Stone loves the smell of napalm in the morning.

He's less keen on raw sewage, burning vegetation and diesel exhaust, but at the click of a mouse any and all can be wafting through his office at Birmingham University.

It's just one of the techniques the computer scientist is using to make video games more realistic. Stone is helping to develop technology likely to end up in home games consoles to create realistic "smell effects."

Players will experience the odors of, say, the racetrack or the battlefield. His research also has a more immediate goal: to train future recruits to the British military.

Stone, a member of the university's school of engineering, is being part-funded by the Ministry of Defense to build, as he puts it, "serious" games.

hmm... with all the sewage levels in half-life 2, or the bowels of the alien mothership in prey.
i`ll pass

They did this in the 30's with Cinemas to get ahead of TV, which was stealing away the entertainment business, the idea worked well for a few movies... but the abandoned the idea in favor for a better one : Huge screens and mind blowing sound.

First game:

Identify me:
- Click here to hear me. (-10 points)
- Click here to smell me. (-20 points) [CLICK]
- Click here to see a part of me. (-40 points)

Yes, you have guessed correctly!
I am a sweaty horse! (+60 points)

What happens if you play Homeworld? There's no air... will you suffocate? :p

But on the plus side... this will introduce Ook back into the gaming world, as his Ook Farts will dominate online gaming.

//anounces: Lib has planted an Ook Fart.
//Monster kill!
//player1 - offline
//player2 - offline
//player3 - offline
//player4 - offline

Was just thinking the same thing :D

Or if you're able to hack somebody's PC, you can have it make the most vile smells ever :sick: :D

*note to self - see to it if purchases can procure one of these things, and have it installed in the Boss's office*

Anyone want to play Leisure Suit Larry with smell added?

been done already - leisure suit larry 7 IIRC.

it was called the "scratch 'n' sniff".

when an icon flashes onscreen (with a number) you simply scratch the part of a card that is included in the game, and sniff it. :sick:

On Playstation 1 with Gran Turisma 2 the CD's were printed with some kind of weird chemical that would smell like burned tyres when it spun and was heated a little :) you could also just rub the CD a bit and smell it.

Meh, don't think this'll be the next big thing exactly. Don't think I'd be interested in this. If it really makes it to the home it'll probably go the way of VR.
