Hello All
I am hoping someone can give me some help please, because I'm going CRAZY. Last Thursday my ISP (www.kingsley.co.za) contacted me that my conversion from dial-up to ADSL had been completed. I "inherited" the office's Telkom ADSL USB Pots modem (the old, green one) that we had been using for more than a year here at the office (we're now using Vodacam HSDPA).
I installed the software from the CD that one gets from the modem, but it never automatically creates a new icon on the desktop (like it says it will do in the user manual on the CD). I tried creating a manual, broadband connection in the network connections panel, but kept getting an error 769 ("The specified destination is not reachable") whenever I tried to connect.
On Monday I decided to get myself a D-Link ethernet card (I know, the modem is USB and doesn't need a network card to work, but what the hell I thought...). After installing the card it stopped giving me error 769, but then started giving me an error 678 ("The remote computer did not respond"). I've made countless phonecalls to Telkom, as awell as my ISP, and have logged several error logs. However, Telkom has called me back and says they can't find anything wrong with my line from their side (they did say however that they picked up a drop in power on my modem/router). Also, my friend, who also has an ADSL connection at home, has taken the modem to his house and tried to install it there. Works perfectly. It even automatically creates the ADSL connection shortcut on the desktop, which it doesn't do on my PC. I am SO frustrated. I think I should just go buy a new modem/router that uses the network card to connect (I took my PC to my friend's house, and we plugged in his LAN cable into my PC, and I could connect to the net).
Before I do that however I was just wondering if anyone could perhaps give a solution? I want to know why the software isn't installing properly on my PC and why I can't connect (the ADSL status does tell me it does pick up the line, I just can't connect with the modem).
I am currently using Windows XP with service pack 2.
ANY help would be muchly obliged, since I just feel so... defeated
