A 39-year-old runner who collapsed in the final stretch of the Comrades Marathon has died in hospital, The Star reported on Tuesday.

Louis du Preez, a father-of-two from Moreleta Park in Pretoria, spent a week in ICU at St Augustine's Hospital in Durban until his death around 2am on Sunday.

Chairman of the Magnoalia Road Runners, of which Du Preez was a member, Tinus Marais said it was suspected Du Preez had an undetected viral infection that led to organ failure.

"Everyone thought he would get better," he said.

Du Preez completed the race in under 11 hours. He ran the marathon as part of the 'Sudan for Jesus' charity initiative. He was one of the top five fundraisers for the group.

Very sad & Condolences to the family.

Sudden unexplained death....

It seems to me like God was not happy with his support of missionary work to convert Muslims to Christians.

Which god though? ....

It's not that unusual, runners have died after Comrades for years. I was waiting for my dad at the Mediclinic one Comrades day (too) many years ago and saw a few being helicoptered in.

Just puts it into perspective as to how hard is is.

The comrades is hectic and takes much more out of your body than what you realize. I remember waiting for my dad to finish a couple of times. Its terrible to see some of those broken people at the finish whilst waiting for a loved one.

Sad that a man dies and all some see is a chance to crack a few religious jokes...

A few years a go I was diagnosed with a harmless heart arrhythmia - seems I inherited it from my mom's side of the family.
(Basically the nerves on the left side fire too late. Complete Left bundle Branch Block)
Seeing as my dad's side has a history of the extremely harmful heart conditions (Only uncle that did not die from that was trampled by a elephant, true story) - I consulted a cardiologist.
Seems I have the heart of a healthy 30 year old, with no cholesterol build up or any other issues.
As for the wiring glitch 'Well sir. You should be fine as long as you don't do something stupid like run the Comrades)
I solemnly promised him never to attempt that. And I intend to keep that promise.

I'd stay away from elephants too if I were you ..

interesting remark !
can you imagine what god thinks of islam - you have heard of a place called syria, haven't you, 160 000 dead or something.
also, he has people that strap bombs to themselves & enter mosques to murder their own people worshiping.
