Yesterday I heard that a colleague o mine lost a parent, which I found very tough...

My que? is what do you say to a friend or a member of the family if something like this happen that will show you care?

How did you took it though and if it was you having to tell someone how were you gonna deliver the news?

Me personally?

I never bothered telling anyone unless they were close family - in which case they knew already.

A few friends stopped by and noticed a room of flowers and immediatley knew what had happened without me saying anything, as my father had been ill a few months already.
