My medical aid(not discovery) paid 100% of the operation costs, but for the actual donar cornea they only covered up to R12 000. This would have more than covered a South African sourced cornea but they were not freely available and there were long waiting lists.
My specialist sourced one sourced from USA at R22 000, so I had to pay in R10 000.
Get your specialist to give you the relevant procedure codes and then aproach your medical aid for pre-aproval.
call discovery and ask for a hospital case manager to be assigned to you
from the case manager, find out who the "dsp" (designated service providers) are for this type of surgery.
once you choose a hospital, speak to the hospital manager and request they charge you at medical aid tariff (avoiding co-payment)
ask your opthalmic surgeon to work within discovery's tariff (ask him to ask the members of the surgical team to do the same) - again, avoiding co-payments
if you do not make these requests all service providers will simply invoice at thier normal tariff & you will in all probability be faced with numerous co-payments
