Configuring network at my home

I have a router in my room with PC connected using Ethernet cable. Have A Media Center PC in my lounge connected to room-router using wireless adapter. Now have an Xbox 360 in my other room currently connected to the same Network using wireless adapter. Problem is am trying to use it as an extender to the lounge PC but streaming is terrible. I can't have an Ethernet cable running from room to room cause they are a bit far apart. But i have a phone jack in the Xbox room and not sure if it can be usefull to connect to the other room router... This is where my question is, can i have a switch/hub or something which will connect to this phone jack and link to the router on the other room?... Please say it's possible:)
 
Network cables use RJ45 connectors, have a look at the phone jack connector, it only uses 2 wires and is allot smaller than your RJ45, so, no.

huh? Have no idea what that means...

There are allot of factors you have to take into account when planning a network:
* How far are the PC's from the router - this is probably the most important question since this will determine whether you need to use wired or wireless (without breaking the bank that is)
* What equipment do I have to work with or how much am I willing to spend?
* What am I going to need the network for? Like you said, streaming. This is bw intensive so right here you will have to look at your better options when taking the wireless route. I personally use ProCurve and have some excellent results with them. What you want is a constant consistent throughput, so good quality antennas and a fairly capable router and you should be set for normal home usage.

Your description is far to vague to go into more detail so lets leave it at that, give us a sketch, distance between points and some log to show current throughput and we might be able to help a lot more...
 
Dont ever use the telephone lines to carry networks.

Other than the jack size which is RJ11/RJ12 vs RJ45 for CAT5e,

1. the telcom cable used is voice grade and not network grade, Google for CAT5e specifications. [Google IS your friend] :)

2. The telcom cable has a voltage, I think it is 80V and could destroy your network equipment.

Bru, I am not sure how big your house is but each Cat5e cable can be 80 metres in length, with a router in the middle thats 160 metres from point to point.

If you dont want to lay cables have a look at using powerline network adapters. If you dont have 3 phase power you can use these devices.

Essentially you are using the electrical wiring of your residence to put a network point at each mains power socket.

Not possible, but if you have the money you could track down a powerline ethernet adaptor.

Not heard of anyone else who has tried it so you may be the first :-)

Basically it plugs into you wall power socket and uses your power lines to transmit data traffic.
 
Its (Powe Ethernet Adapter) crap, worse than a wireless network.


I have a wireless network that streams to my media centre, I think you need to look at ways to improve your signal strength on your wirelss network.

The only time I have issues with my wireless network is when I'm trying to stream HD movies.

I saw something similar at Incredible Connection. It's basically your broadband connection "through" your home's electricity. If I knew about this earlier, I would definitely have bought it.

If you choose to buy it, make sure you get one that's at least faster than 54mbps, otherwise it won't help much. Also, report back here if it works.

Check out Incredible Connection, but I'm not sure if they'll have the "faster" versions, also, that store I posted E3, you can send them an email, I made an entire purchase through email.
 
Friend bought the most expensive one on the market (europe) and wasnt happy with it.Good luck but I think you will end up wasting your cash.

Incredible Connection at Century City didn't know what i was talking about... Went to Computer Mania and the sales man was too impressed to here that such exist and said he will check it out & said thanx for the info:(... Cape Town is too slow ppl!

I think i will have to call someone to install the Ethernet cable from room to room
