You have beaten the out of bundle shark simply and easily by making it an opt in service where some of your much larger competitors have failed to do so in the interest of their customers.

If there was ever a reason to stick to the underdog and suffer the odd patch of bad signal then this is it.

The bad signal thing will be a thing of the past soon, with MTN 4g roaming coming...

Has this option been added somewhere on our menu system for clients? Additionally where did you find these comms that this was “launched”.

To be honest I've never actually personally experienced it.

FNB has beat both Vodacom and MTN where I work and live.

Yesterday I ran out of data for the first time in ages (due to home internet outage) and everything just stopped dead.

Then I read my SMS's which I normally ignored and got the following...

"FNB :) Please recharge or dial *147# to opt in for the out-of-bundle charges to use the service again as you have depleted your data bundle.

Not sure when the change happened, since it's the first time I've experienced it but now it's glorious.

It appears however that by default you will not get sharked now and will need to be extra stupid and ask for it, which is the correct way to go about it.

You could have just said Vodacom and MTN - less to type :)

I personally won't congratulate FNB Connect. Their telemarketers are a real bloody nuisance. Not only will they push the sale of their FNB service, but they will redial me a 2nd to a 3rd time on a daily basis. When I refuse a service, I refused the service.

Nonetheless, kudus for the choice of opting in beyond the means of a limited service.

Actually just wasn’t sure if CellC directly does the same and how Telkom’s works.
Telkom redirects you to a landing page when your bundle runs out, and you can opt to go OOB or you can buy a topup

Telkom Mobile's redirects you to their OOB page where you must choose between buying a bundle, enabling out-of-bundle, or continuing with a free small quota (1 GB on some packages?) (throttled I think).

I believe if on a phone (and maybe some "desktop" OSes) you would get that "You need to log in to the network" dialog that takes you to the same page.

It has been like this forever, I think from when they were still branded 8ta, and no-one else was doing this (IIRC).

Weird, I've not had a single telemarketer from FNB.

You sure it's not someone else pretending?

Yeah I do remember they've had it for a while or from the beginning as you say I just wasn't sure how it works.

Have never managed to cap my Telkom sim.

Nope, I confirmed the number, but ironically when I asked FNB of the said number they refused to confirm it of their origin.

It is not only FNB Connect, but also FNB Life Insurance...

Very weird. FNB have my permission to market to me but they never call. MiWay, on the other hand, have too many free minutes.

I don’t want to go OT here since I can appreciate opting in as a right.

I did contact FNB, and they did confirm the telemarketing of said services, but they refused to confirm or deny the numbers they used for dialling me. It is horrendously irritable when called repeatedly for a service already denied.

Done on this topic.

Bear In mind those numbers are used by multiple companies and cycled often.

A number isn’t a sure fire proof of origin any more.
