I was wondering if there were any cellphones on the market that was capable of connecting to sentech's network in order to access the net instead of going through one of the existing cell providers?

Nope. There's is a phone in design by IPWireless but it's FAR from the market. And then, it will only work on Sentech's network.

GSM phones are incompatible with Sentech's network, even though both are marketed as "3G".

Thats a shame because I can think of many interesting applications if something like that was possible. I assume the same goes for iBurst?

Yip. Unfortunately both Sentech and iBurst use Proprietry Protocols, so unless they market it, you won't get one.

The only problem I could see with a sentech "Cellphone" is due to the lack of coverage, using it would be pretty crappy.

Rodent is right - IPWireless do have a phone which has been developed for their networks but Sentech are not looking at this right now. Not worth it on MyWireless or IBurst. You could of course use a VoIP application (like Skype) which has its limitations but does work. You can use something like a PDA with WiFi to "similate" a cellphone experience using Skype. But don't go thinking about telling Vodacom or MTN to get stuffed just yet!
