connect remotely

ok so what i want to do is connect remotely conenct to my pc at home from work, what is the best way to do this? its not a fixed ip and i run local only. could i find out what my ip is when i connect and then try and do a remote connection to that ip??? would that work?

run a tightvnc server on your home pc and a vncviewer on work pc then connect. dont forget to password protect it
 
1. Get a static ip from somebody like dynadns
2. Configure your router to route to forward the traffic for that ip to your pc
3. Set up something like vnc on pc

will that work with local bandwidth? and i would obviosly only be able to conenct for the time that my ip stays the same cause it will change if i get disconnected.

yes that will work but dyndns is not a local only thing u need international.
 
I had the same problem - a strictly local only account at the office meant I couldnt use dyndns or anything like it (my ISP doesnt offer it though some do).

I leave an email application running when I go home that is set to auto forward any email coming from a specific email account (in my case my blackberry) with a specific subject and body text.

I then look at the headers of the email and get the remote IP from there and log on with my vnc.

As long as the remote router is configured to auto forward the right port (5900 iirc) then it is a breeze. Make sure you set up a strong password though.
 
im using the telkom modem 100 something, is it easy enough to setup or check if port is open?

I've been in communication with Vedivi (Wallcooler) via email. They've sent me the latest beta's, mentioned they have Servers in South Africa (although I haven't tested in on a local connection) and they are generally a friendly bunch.

Give it a shot. Small tip, their site has an easier FAQ, User Guide than my post. My post is just an explanation of their guide.
 
Axxess also offers a dynamic dns service for local only accounts, provided you got an account with them. or just buy a gig of prepaid and off you go should last for a fair amount of time.

Works rather well use it myself to vpn to my home system, then VNC into.

Not sure if any other local ISP offer a Dynamic dns service.

well i got vnc working on my mweb it works well, not bad for being free.
 
So I need to connect remotely to my office too... I plan on using an Axxess local only account and preferably want to use only a local account so that I don't have to run Route Sentry etc. on the server machine, plus the fact that there accounts have built in DDNS are really handy and affordable. I'm quite the noob to port forwarding and I'm still not entirely sure if I could get the system to run on local only bandwidth entirely....

I've been viewing CCTV through a remote connection to my office using Hamachi which the camera guys setup on a trial basis, but I'm really not impressed. High latency and a terrible ping don't make it very attractive to use it as a relaible solution, plus theres the initial 'handshake' which would require running Route Sentry with local and int. account :( .I've looked at OpenVPN and Wallcooler and I'm reasonably impressed....any other VPN software I should look at? Just as a side note, are different Operating systems at client and server a problem....eg. XP Pro SP3 and Vista x32 Business when running Wallcooler?

I'm not even entirely sure that this is what I need but it still seems more cost effective than getting a physical hardware VPN solution.... Even Telkom VPN Lite is rather expensive for what I need it for, plus they're just rather useless at anything.

Any suggestions or help would be really really appreciated!!

I have connected fine to XP from Vista and vice versa...I am not able to confirm if WallCooler works on local only, that's a test for another day I'm afraid, since I don't need that functionality ;)
