Hey guys
I want to be able to connect to my work PC (which is always on) and use it as if I was infront of it from home pc. Is there any free reliable software to do this and what would I need to do to get it working. Totally new on this subject. Im assuming will have to make work machine a server of some sort with a public IP address? Then connect to this server remotly using software?

Thanks

www.teamviewer.com - all you do is download it , install it , leave it running on work pc and take not of id/pass , run teamviewer from home type in the id you wish to connect to - enter the pass - bam no port forwarding needed 100% noob friendly.

What would you like to achieve?

VPN may be better than remote desktop if you are simply trying to work on files stored on your work PC without having to tranfer them back and forth.

Otherwise remote desktop wise there are many different apps. Radmin, TightVNC, UltraVNC, XP built-in remote assistance, Logmein, Gencontrol(LAN only I think) and plenty more I can't think of.

Each work differently, have their own shortfalls and advantages. Logmein is supposed to be really great and easy for the first time user...Our company blocks logmein on the proxy server though and I do not know the reason why :p so maybe security is a factor?

Resuscitating an old thread-

I've just discovered Teamviewer and it's probably the best app I've come across this year.

I install it on all clients pc's and if there's a problem I'm on their pc in a minute.

No fancy config - in fact you don't even need to install it, you can just run the app.

Compared to logmein, vnc etc it's a complete no-brainer.

I concur, TeamViewer is unbelievable. The client side doesn't even need to be installed just run the exe and it works makes support easy.

A+++++

Do you work for a corporate? Don't they have an official means of remote controlling internal machines. Although the remote admin programs are protected by passwords and such like, you are allowign the 'internet' to connect to a internal machine - never a good idea. If someone managed to remote your machine they then have full access to your network.

If it a small setup then its not too much of a big deal, but for corporates any mention of this and the security guys should come running :)
