Connect two computers using a crossover cable

I connected my two computers. Both runs on Windows 7 ultimate. I connected via the Ethernet Cable. I did all the steps. Set the ips. My pcs both came out on the network. But I can't access any files. Its says it protected. I don't have access. Why???

direct connection? or via a router? Try manually sharing each file you wish to share, (right click, share with everyone etc etc) just to test. Also, disable firewall and anti virus, also for testing process. Once you have done this, go to my computer, left panel, click on network. there you should see your other PC's name. Click on it and if your shared item is not there, then click on the other PC's name, then users, then name again, then desktop (make sure your shared folder is on the other PC's desktop). Also make sure you've created a home network. I could be way off, im no PC guru, but this is how i share things off our PC's and it works 100%.

Also, make sure that both PC's share the same "Home Network Password" so that they can share

Ja, I have had issues sometimes where it asks for user / password, even though I didnt set it up to require a password. I just enabled password on logon and used the same credentials when connecting.... (make sure the account credentials have full admin rights)

Just for interest you can use a normal straight network cable.... no need for a cross-over cable...

a auto-sensing network port will sense what cable you plugged in... and most pcs/laptops that came out over the past 10 years has a auto sensing network port...

Hello. I'm still having a problem. I can see both the pcs on Network. But I can't access anything. Even if I shared it 4rm both pc's. It says access denied. You need permission.

Just make sure that both computers are using the same username and password to logon at start up. Windows automatically sends the user name and password used on the computer when first signing in when trying to access the file on another computer. If your computer takes you straight to the desktop on startup, it is still logging in using the username and password first created when the computer was first set up.

Check your permissions of the files (folders) that you want to share. Right click on the file/folder and select Share With > Specific People. Select Everyone from the drop down box and click on the Add button. then in the box below you can change the permission to Read/Write.

Another option is to turn off password protected sharing (Network and Sharing Center > Advanced Sharing Settings > Home or Work)
