Connecting HDD DVD Recorder to SD-PVR

Morning All,

I need help connecting our HDD DVD recorder (LG 320G). I have tried various options, to no avail. I will give a quick break down of the components connected, if someone could please assist where I am going wrong.

TV has the following sources :
TV (not connected - we don't have an aerial)
SCART 1 - Wii
SCART 2 - was open, currently connected HDD DVD Recorder
Composite - PVR
S-Video - empty
Component 1 - dvd player with surround sound
Component 2 - empty
HDMI - PS3
PC - Empty

I followed the steps below (SCART to S-video/RCA to PVR), but I seemed to miss a step, as the HDD was not connected to the TV, so I could not see it's menu. Also, the HDD does not have an S-Video INPUT, only tuner, AV1 - 2, and DV (camcorder).

Here is how you do it:

1. Get yourself a SCART to S-VIDEO / RCA converter plug - about R 50-00 or so from Makro / Ellies, etc, a S-VIDEO to S-VIDEO cable, and a 2 RCA to 2 RCA audio cable
2. Plug the S-VIDEO / RCA converter plug into the VCR SCART socket in the SD-PVR (if the SCART converter plug has a INPUT / OUTPUT switch on it - set it to OUTPUT)
3. Then plug in the S-VIDEO cables and RCA cables from the SCART converter into the back of your DVD/HDD recorder (NB - I am ASSUMING that your DVD/HDD recorder DOES have a S-VIDEO input - as mine does)
4. GO to the SD-PVR's ADVANCED menu option, select the option for TV setup and change the VCR output option from 'Composite' to 'S-video' (check your SD-PVR manual for exact details - going from memory here!)
5. Set your DVD/HDD recorder's INPUT option to S-VIDEO - and select the AV INPUT on your TV that you use for the DVD/HDD recorder - (mine was connected on the AV COMPONENT inputs)6. Use the SD-PVR's TV1 remote to call up the playlist for either normal recordings (option 1) - or Video on Demand ones (option 2) - select required recording - cue up the item on the PVR first (press pause)
7. Then press REC on the DVD/HDD recorder - release pause on the SD-PVR - voila! - content is copied from the SD-PVR to your DVD/HDD recorder!

So I have now used the SCART to S-Video, and connected the HDD to the TV this way, which means I get a menu for the HDD on the TV, but the HDD is not connected to the PVR in any way.

What is my next step please? Or what do I have to do over?

you seem to be complicating matters?
you have an SD pvr, it has 2 av outs 1 for tv1 and one for tv2, you are probaly only using the 1 av out to go to the tv?
then use the other av out (tv2) to connect it to the av in of your HDD DVD.
you other option is to connect the RF(aerial) out of the Sd pvr to the rf in of your HDD DVD, i dont recomend this as it wont be in stereo

... and will deliver worst possible picture quality...

+1 for hooking up the SDPVR TV2 output to the AV1 or AV2 input on the HDD Recorder - works for me and I can still record one channel and watch another...
 
TV / VCR SCART outputs on SD-PVR

Hi avdp

The solution mentioned above is the best one - use the TV SCART output on your SD-PVR to feed the S-video input on your LCD TV - and - as suggested - use the VCR SCART output on the SD-PVR to feed the HDD / DVD recorder - remember that you will have to use the SD-PVR's 'TV1' Remote to access the playlists on the SD-PVR - as the feed through the SCART outputs is ONLY the 'TV1' feed - 'TV2' feed is through the PVR's 'TV2' RCA connectors ONLY!

Hi all,

I am revisiting this thread, as I need help again. I was never able to complete the setup as above, but figured out that the S-Video cable was blocking the picture. The moment I unplugged it, all worked. So the connection is currently as follows :
SD-PVR : SCART with RCA to RCA on HDD
HDD : HDMI to amp

I havent used it in ages. When I now try and record from the SD-PVR playlist, it says that it it picks up recording blocking.

Any suggestions?

Just to add to the above.

If I have the red, white, yellow connected, along with the S-Video - the picture jumps. If I have the red and white connected, with S-Video, there is no picture, irrespective what I use as no 4 - VCR output.

Assistance would be appreciated.

Ok, googled a bit. There are suggestions for a video stabilizer. Would this work?
 
Macrovision Blocking on SD-PVR

I last had an SD-PVR in 2009, and the only way I could record the Video-On-Demand (Catch-Up) content was to use the SCART/S-VIDEO output option on the SD-PVR, which bypassed the Macrovision copy protection encoded in this 'protected' content.

Normal Playlist entries however recorded with no problem at all, either via the SD-PVR's RCA (TV2) or SCART/S-Video (TV1) outputs.

I do remember that after I sold my SD-PVR, that Multichoice did a software update to the SD-PVR's that now apparently blocks content from now being recorded through the S-Video outputs as well as through the RCA outputs.

A Macrovision copy protection eliminator would seem to be the only viable option now to allow you to record the content off your SD-PVR onto a HDD DVD recorder.

Your best bet would be to contact HD Cabling - http://www.hdcabling.co.za/index.php - and see if they can assist you further.
 
Thanks for the help. Just a pity these are so expensive - Grex is R1695.
