Connecting - Old Dual view decoder to modern TV

My father still uses the old Dual view Mnet decoder and CRT TV. I have just bought him a new Samsung LED TV and to my disgust did not check the connectors.

I have done this from the UK and my brother to install it for him. This is when we discovered the incompatibility between the two devices. Decoder is AV out only and the TV is RF and HDMI in with no AV in option.

I can find lots of cables with either AV to HDMI option or AV to RF combination. Where would I find these in Pretoria?

I am also thinking that it may not be as easy as just using the correct cable, but that I may also need a converter. This is where I need the help of the techies on this forum.

Please provide help and advice on how to marry these to devices and have it up and running as it should.

Much obliged.

There is an RF output on the original dual view. It is a different connector to the one on the TV, an F type like the connector for the satellite

Look for a tv antenna symbol. The required bits can be bought at Pick and Pay, Game or similar.

The best result would be to buy a new decoder. Even the basic one now has HD and the results are worth it using an HDMI link.

Except there is no dual view decoder anymore...

Using RF would be the easiest but the picture quality will be dreadful, AV to HDMI will be slightly better but still not great...

NuWorld in Menlyn will have the RF cable and the AV to HDMI converter

Plan B. Will this work?

Instead of all this cable swapping and AV/HDMI converters would it be possible to by a new HD decoder and connect that via HDMI to the TV. The other channel can remain in the current "model T" decoder for the 2nd TV?

New decoder about R500
HDMI/AV converter and cable R1000+

Must work, surely?

To be able to do what you propose requires that the new decoder and the dual view decoder be combined via MC's XtraView feature, which the old dual view decoder cannot support.

The dual view decoder has a RF output, which should be suitable for use to distribute to both TVs via the existing RF distribution already in place? All that will be required is a splitter.

If you move to a new decoder, you will have to get 2 new decoders to get the dual view functionality currently available. Also note that this may require a change of the LNB also, as well as even the antenna, so I bit more info is required before anyone ca really advise you on the way forward.
(a) diameter of antenna
(b) type of LNB (TWIN LNB or Single LNB)
(c) location of the two TVs being fed by the dual view decoder.
(d) desire to remotely control the decoder/s from the remote TV viewing point.
(e) existing package subscribed to.

You could use a AV to RF convertor to drive the RF input on the new TV, but that will mean losing the benefit of the new TV to some extent.

These things are not as simple as some think they are and require a bit of thought before just replacing a component such as a TV.

Very surprised about the lack of RCA outputs on the TV. What make and model is it?
