Connecting to a PSTN line modem

Hi,

Is it possible to connect to a modem on a normal Post Office Line, in this instance the modem is in Zimbabwe from/via my K4505-z Vodacom modem?

No... Post Office don't have PSTN lines... Telkom does.

This definitely used to be possible with the first 3G modems, I guess you'll have to try it and see.
Have a look at the 3GPP technical specification 27.007 (AT command set for User Equipment), in particular the section 'HSCSD device parameters +CHSD'.

You'll probably need to use some of the above commands in your modem initialization string when you set up the dial-up connection.

If I recall correctly, you can connect using CSD (circuit switched data) at up to 9600bps and be charged half the rate of the cellular call, or using HSCSD (high speed circuit switched data) at up to 42kbps and be charged the full rate of the cellular call.

Note that you will be charged for the duration of the connection, unlike PSD (packet switched data - GPRS, 3G, etc.) where you are charged for the volume of data.

That is a rather hefty document. Most of which does not mean a great deal to me. Thou there is much that is familiar from many days with modems ...
