Connecting to PC from home

I would like to connect to my comp at work that is connected to a switch/hub on a local network. The Telkom ADSL router is connected to the hub. So while I;m at work everyone can connect to the internet. However when I'm logged onto the internet at home and ping the IP at work it's ok but I cant connect to my work comp. It obviuosly only sees the IP of the router. Is there some way of connecting to my comp through that router??. It's the standard Telkom POTs one.

Help would be very much appeciated.
 
Get no-ip, install on your pc, setup ftp on your pc. 1 2 3.
 
Thanks for the help...I dloaded no-ip and got registered. However it doesn't help because it still doesn't allow me to view the pc thats on the network. It only sees the router. Any ideas? not sure what u were saying with the ftp side.

I would just configure the router to port forward to your machine.
i.e. Router gets incomming request on TCP port n and forwards request to your machine on TCP port n.

Then just run the required services on your machine to accept the requests.
e.g. Remote Desktop (3389) and FTP Server (21 [Passive mode only]).

The Teklom POTS router is configured through it's WEB interface. You know how to open the WEB interface?
 
thanks, it's starting to make sense. If I go to my web browser and type in the IP of the router it brings me to the config page which has various sub menus. Is it part of that?
 
Im on a network, that looks something like this:

www---ADSL---Router/hub---wireless/hub---My pc

I had ftp's and hosted websites without any port forwarding or special setup. Telkom said it cant be done because they dont want it to be done. What service do you want to activate on your pc. I assume you know that you cant view your pc over the internet like you view a pc over a network?
 
I need to take over the pc at work with either PC anywhere or remote administrator to transfer files to a machine I have in the factory. Basically RIP software. I've done it by dialling in directly but never over the net. I don't have a problem connecting and taking over my PC at home using remote administrator. It's just the other way around. Obviously because I have the switch to get through first.

If I did it from home I suppose it would be like this...Pc - www - router - hub - Pc?

So basically it seems I need to set it up to port forward in the router? If so can u take me through it on the old Telkom modem? please? ;)
 
Hehe I would but I dont have that modem, but look for port forwarding under the settings. Find out wich port it will use. Then enter the ip to wich you want to forward the port and enter the port number at the work's router, you can connect from the work to home so there shouldnt be a problem at home, but repeat it anyway for incase.
 
dante76 - sorry, I meant to look last night but I forgetted.
I would just remote desktop onto my machine at home now and take a look, but I'm scared it disconnects me, and it's busy doing stuff that I need desperately. But - i'll definately have a look tonight.
