why not just port forward and allow RDP and resource sharing?
Simple and quick...
A while ago someone told my if I want to connect to the work pc's from home, I must set up port forward on the routers, and allow rdp and resource sharing.

Can anyone pls just explain to me exactly what I will do here, and how to do it. And after i set the settings, still how do I connect to the pc's (3 of them) at work.

It will be mainly for file sharing, cause many time when at homw, I need files at work, and vica versa.

Thanks

Okay, but pls explain. I'm not completely clueless with pc's, but with networking I struggle. Is it a program I must download and install (VPN), or something on the router? Both home and work are on adsl.

Don't just open a RDP port. There are certain worms out there who will attack any RDP port, and if successful, will spread like wildfire inside your network.

Don't take that chance.

Rather, set up a VPN.

PPTP VPN is quick and easy to set up.

Open port 1723 on the router (incoming) and protocol 47 (GRE).

If you want something more secure, look at openVPN.

If it is just file sharing you are after, why not install FTP hosts on each computer? There are a bazillion guides if you google how to set up an FTP server :)

Install Hamachi

https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/

Works a charm with zero hassle. Wont be as fast as forwarding through your router etc, but it works behind any firewall, NAT etc.
and its free.
I created an account online and downloaded the "program" on my pc and laptop. Now I'"see" my pc on the laptop program, but it just says "not connected". This is the same on the pc. Why is this, and what can I do to connect?

How many Work PCs do you need to Access from home ?? You can use an easier alternative, Teamviewer... You just need to install it and you good to go, No Need to configure anything.

First PC (either the Home or the work PC)

1.When you start hamachi for the first time, it will display your IP as 0.0.0.0. To get a valid Hamachi IP address, click on the Power Button (located on the bottom left of the Hamachi Window)

2. Next you will have to click the Network button, which is located on the bottom right of hamachi

3. then select "Create a new Network", enter a network name and password (both are case sensitive).

Second (third, forth pc etc)

Install and do Step 1 and Step 2 as above, for Step 3 do the following:

Choose "Join an existing Network", enter the Network name that you created on the first PC..

...

Once you done with this you can begin setting up the Remote desktop...
