Will be going to Taiwan for 3 to 4 days in December :D

What is the cheapest way to get data while I am there?

I use WhatsApp 99% of the time, but might need to make a daily phone call home :p

Currently on an MTN contract with Samsung Galaxy SIII.

Suggestions please?

Do you like your house? If yes, then leave your MTN sim behind.

MTN's data roaming rates in Asia is R3.50 / 25kb and data is billed in 25kb increments. That works out to R140 / MB = R140 000 / GB

Make sure it is provisioned for data.

When making that request, expect a blank look. They are trained in SA to be stupid. So be persistent, as if you are talking to JHB Metro callo center

(But they can talk about polyphonic ringtones and how to download a Rihanna screensaver1)

Agree, I travel quite a bit and this remains the best solution. Hotel wireless not always cheap and most times you have to pay for a period or certain fixed amount of data resulting in wastage.

Buy a reputable and well known prepaid sim for which there will be recharge vouchers available at most outlets. Maybe Google beforehand to check which is the most popular provider and also check coverage.
